France Expresses Dissatisfaction Over Felix Tshisekedi's Victory; Calls for Clarity

The Democratic Republic of Congo's opposition leader Felix Tshisekedi was on Thursday named the provisional victor of a long-awaited presidential poll paving the way for the crisis-hit country's first transfer of power in 18 years.

Martin Fayulu told the BBC the people of the nation deserved to know the truth of the election, which he said had led to a "coup".

Speaking to cheering supporters at his campaign headquarters, Tshisekedi paid his respects to outgoing President Joseph Kabila, whom he called "an important political partner", and promised to rule for all Congo's 80 million people. According to the count maintained by the Catholic Church, which deployed 40,000 observers for the election, Fayulu should have won.

"The results have nothing to do with the truth of the ballot box", he told RFI, and called on observers of the December 30 vote to publish the real results.

"We will never accept this nomination".

These elections were seen by many as a hypothesis that the DRC had a first transition of peaceful power since its independence in 1960.

Moussa Faki Mahamat took cognizance of the provisional results of the presidential election in the DRC, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, according to an AU statement.

The candidate he hand-picked to succeed him, loyalist, former interior minister Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, came third in the poll.

In the Kinshasa neighborhood of Limete where Tshisekedi lives, thousands of people danced in the streets in celebration and cars slowed down and honked their horns.

Several deaths and injuries have been reported in the wake of the results.

The church itself has so far only said that the official results did not reflect the data its observers collected from polling stations.

Abroad, the mood was watchful, marked by a noticeable lack of congratulations for Tshisekedi.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian demanded clarity on results "which are the opposite to what we expected".

"Canada is hopeful that the situation remains calm and calls on political representatives as well as the other involved parties to resolve all disputes in a peaceful manner and respectful of institutions".

Fayulu has also openly disputed the results, calling the poll an "electoral coup". It said it was awaiting clarification from global observers and urged all sides to refrain from violence.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is congratulating Congo for its election, urging the region and wider worldwide community to refrain from speculation and allow Congolese election officials to finish their work.

The announcement of an opposition win was a shock because many had expected the results to be stacked in Shadary's favour, prompting heavy global pressure on Kinshasa to respect the wishes of the electorate while the mammoth ballot count was under way.

The vast central African country has been increasingly on edge over the long-delayed vote.

"The United States also notes the importance of President Joseph Kabila's decision to abide by his constitutionally mandated term limits and transfer power to a successor".

"Mr Kabila is a Congolese citizen".

"Instead, he chose to split the opposition by creating a power-sharing deal with Tshisekedi".

Fayulu alleges that Kabila engineered a backroom deal with the largely untested Tshisekedi to protect his power base in a country with staggering mineral wealth.
