Theresa May brings ailing Brexit deal back to Parliament

Her proposal aims to restrict the government's freedom to use the Finance Bill to make tax changes linked to a no deal Brexit without the "explicit consent" of Parliament.

The letter concluded: "We urge MPs, in light of the central role Parliament will play in the coming days in resolving this impasse, to recognise the severe impact No Deal will have and to take all steps necessary to avoid such a departure coming to pass".

Yesterday, UK MPs voted in favour of demanding that the government come up with an alternative plan to Brexit within three working days if it loses the meaningful vote next week.

So if May came back with an alternative plan, that could be amended by MPs, giving parliament far more scope in setting the direction.

Sir Oliver Letwin, a former minister in David Cameron's government who has never previously rebelled over Brexit, said that it was a signal to hard Brexit supporters that MPs would block a "no deal" scenario. But the bloc refuses to reopen the agreement, and opposition to the negotiated deal remains strong from both pro-Brexit and pro-EU lawmakers in Britain.

The Republic of Ireland's Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, said he could not accept a situation where Northern Ireland was handed veto powers over the backstop measure either.

May has said a vote against would be opening the way for a disorderly exit or for Brexit not to happen at all, while opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called on Thursday for an election to break the impasse.

With time running out for the Prime Minister to shore up support for her controversial exit plan, Government sources told the Press Association that supporting an opposition bid to enshrine European Union standards was being considered. "I think what's important is that if we are to secure assurances, MPs are aware of what they are before the vote takes place", a Downing Street spokesman said.

In the Commons, Tory anger was directed towards Mr Bercow who many MPs have long suspected is unduly sympathetic to the Remain cause. And there is no clear majority in Parliament for any single alternate course.

Labour has said it will seek a confidence vote in the government if it loses next week, and is also likely to press for a general election.

The comments came as MPs continued to debate the prime minister's Brexit deal in the House of Commons ahead of a vote on her agreement next Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said the United Kingdom may need to request a postponement of Brexit day if deadlock in Westminster continues and the risk of the United Kingdom leaving on March 29 without a deal becomes more likely. Brexit supporters are anxious that there is no mechanism for Britain to unilaterally withdraw, meaning it could end up indefinitely stuck in the union, hampering its ability to strike deals with the rest of the world.

"Labour stands ready to bring Leave and Remain voters together to rebuild Britain for the many, not the few".

The deal, between the government of the United Kingdom and the European Union, had been struck in November after more than a year of back-and-forth negotiations between London and Brussels.
