Trump Stands By Demand for Complete Wall at Border

US President Donald Trump is meeting congressional leaders at the White House today where he will discuss funding for his border wall, a divisive issue that has pushed a government shutdown into its 12th day. "Could have a lot easier presidency by doing nothing. but I'm here, I want to do it right", Trump said in wide-ranging remarks from the Cabinet room minutes before briefing on border security with top national security officials and top lawmakers from both parties. "We have to have border security and the wall is a big part of border security, the biggest part".

Tomorrow we will bring to the floor legislation that will open up government. Although she gave him credit for shutting down the government, she then lamented, "He will fold in the end".

The shutdown was triggered by Trump's demand that Congress allocate more than $5bn in taxpayer money to build a wall along the 2,000-mile border between the United States and Mexico - a concession Democrats refuse to make.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders accused Democrats of refusing to compromise.

White House officials, including the departing chief of staff, had indicated that Trump's signature campaign pledge to build the wall would not be fulfilled as advertised.

Congressional leaders were unable to strike a deal to end a partial shutdown of the federal government at a meeting with Donald Trump on Thursday, and the president invited them to return to the White House on Friday for further negotiations.

Trump suggested Tuesday that the shutdown would make for a less than ideal start for Pelosi, the likely incoming Speaker of the House. Democrats have offered $1.3 and $1.6 billion at various times for improving border security, but prohibiting any be spent on Trump's wall.

Added Schumer, "We would hope they would reconsider".

He added that the amount of money Trump is seeking to fund a border wall is minuscule in comparison to the country's federal debt.

Even if Democrats believe some of Trump's actions, including Trump's reported hush money payments to women during the 2016 campaign, clear the threshold of "high crimes and misdemeanors", Pelosi has downplayed the prospects of impeachment.

But the Republican-led Senate appears unlikely to consider the Democratic funding bills.

Trump's statement on crossings contradicts the Department of Homeland Security.

The Republican-controlled Senate passed legislation last month that would have funded the government through 8 February without money for a border wall.

The Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C., is among those institutions closed due to the partial government shutdown.

Even if only symbolic, passage of the bills in the House would put fresh pressure on the president. At the same time, administration officials said Trump was in no rush for a resolution to the impasse. Major agencies like the Pentagon and the Health and Human Services Department have already been funded through the end of the fiscal year September 30, thanks to spending bills passed by Congress earlier in the year and signed by Trump. If he can't get it done, or at least started, by 2020, one of his signature promises would be deemed a failure and could become a major problem for his reelection. Democrats have remained committed to blocking any funding for the wall.
