Suspect in California officer's shooting death is captured

A man has been arrested for allegedly killing an Indian-American police officer during a traffic stop in California's Newman county, officials said.

Talking about the suspect, Sheriff Christianson said that Arriaga was arrested twice previously for driving under the influence of alcohol and has known gang affiliation. He crossed the border in Arizona several years ago and had worked a variety of jobs as a labourer, including at several dairies. Christianson said if he had been deported, Singh would still be alive. His profile picture shows him smiling as he stands at a patrol auto with his police dog - the same photograph of the officer released by the Sheriff's Department.

Arriaga, who exchanged fire with Singh, has claimed to be involved with a gang called the Sureũos and was trying to escape to Mexico, Mr. Christianson said.

The 33-year-old officer was an immigrant, too, arriving legally from his native Fiji to fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, authorities said.

A police honor guard will stand sentry at Singh's casket for a viewing set for Friday from 9 a.m.to 12 p.m at the Newman Community Meeting Room, followed by a second viewing and honor guard salute at a funeral home in nearby Modesto.

"Build the Wall!" The officer's killing came amid a fight between Trump and congressional Democrats over funding for a border wall that's forced a partial government shutdown.

A two-day statewide manhunt ended Friday with the arrest of Gustavo Perez Arriaga, who came out with his hands up as a SWAT team prepared to raid a home in Bakersfield, California.

President Donald Trump weighed in on the shooting on Thursday after Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said the suspect was in the country illegally. Christianson said. "It's a conversation we need to have". He is survived by his wife and 5-month-old son.

As Fox News reported, Gustavo Perez Arriaga is accused in the shooting death of Newman Police Cpl. Officer Singh had served since 2011.

"Without our brothers and sisters in the law enforcement this would never have happened", Chief Richardson said.

"We had them in custody [Thursday] and asked for their cooperation and they lied to us", Christianson said during a news conference Friday afternoon.

Brown's spokesman said the law "fully permits the sharing of information on risky gang members".

He said that Singh's murder won't change the minds of open-borders advocates in California. He said both men were also in the country illegally.

"My experience in NY has been different, where members of the NYPD-clearly the most professional, highly trained law enforcement entity in the country, if not the world-has been that these sanctuary laws actually help promote public safety by encouraging cooperation, encouraging communication between community and police in a way that allows police to better do their job", Jeffries said.
