New Year's Eve Times Square drone grounded due to weather, NYPD says

A rainy New Year's Eve in NY has some Times Square revelers ponying up to keep dry, while police are scrapping plans to deploy a drone to keep watch over the crowd for the first time.

Dan + Shay, Bastille and New Kids On The Block will perform medleys of their hit songs on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve", and singer songwriter Bebe Rexha will perform John Lennon's "Imagine" before the 60-second countdown to the midnight ball drop. It's the first time a drone has been used this way during the festivities.

Veterans of the celebration said the rain wasn't all that bad, considering past year was one of the coldest on record at 10 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 Celsius).

NEW YORK-Reporters will be the guests of honor at the New Year's Eve party in New York's Times Square on Monday (Tuesday in Manila), in what organizers said was a celebration of press freedom after an unusually deadly year for journalists at USA news outlets and a challenging one for others around the world.

This year, there are more ways than ever to watch the biggest night of the (new) year. Umbrellas were banned from the celebration for security reasons, so Duke had to discard the umbrella's shaft at a checkpoint. Plastic ponchos were allowed, with street vendors selling them for $5 on nearby avenues.

"When we watch it on TV, it looks so much fun, there's so much animation", said Brenkel, who was attending the festivities with two friends. "But we're waiting for the show to start".

This year, the ball is a 12-foot diameter geodesic sphere covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles lit by 32,256 LEDs. Helicopters, blocker vehicles, and bomb-sniffing police dogs will reportedly also be part of the NYPD's boosted security, according to NBC News. The numerals "2019" will burst into light at midnight accompanied by pyrotechnics and the release of 3,000 pounds of confetti.

Once people enter the security pens, they can't come and go.

Carmen Diaz, one of the workers delivering food, yelled "Happy New Year's" as she twirled on the sidewalk in a pink, cardboard fedora.

A minute before midnight, journalists, including from ABC News, NBC News, the Washington Post, Reuters and other outlets, will join Mayor Bill de Blasio in pushing the button to initiate the ball drop.

Simon said the invited journalists represented those who "work hard every day to keep their communities informed and hold the powerful to account".
