Investigations Started on CenturyLink Outage, 911 Failures 28 December 2018

The outages reported Thursday afternoon stretched from NY to California and even temporarily shut down phone services at the Idaho Department of Correction and knocked out 911 emergency call services in parts of western Washington state.

Police are also urging residents to only call 911 in case of an emergency, and to not call 911 to test if it's working.

At 9:20 a.m., the Collin County sheriff's department posted on its Facebook the 911 system was still down in the area.

According to the company, the outage began early on Thursday and has impacted states from NY to California. Whether you're in a auto crash, a burning building, or facing a serious medical problem, the last thing you want to hear when you dial "911" is a busy signal.

'The CenturyLink service outage is. completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling, ' Pai said in a statement.

One member of the Federal Communications Commission said the cause of the national outage needed to be investigated, the AP reported. Other areas of the country also experiencing 911 outages included parts of Missouri, Idaho and Arizona.

The statement provided no other details, including the cause of the problem and how many customers were affected.

But while the US ISP is working on restoring service, things may not be going as smooth as the company was hoping for. Rather than using digital devices, they had to take notes with pencil and paper, according to the Greeley Tribune.

The company said the mysterious "network element" issue impacted service at 15 of its data centers, across both Europe and North America.

Officials in Sweetwater County, Wyoming resorted to publishing alternate phone numbers for those needing emergency services, as the CenturyLink outage affected the Sweetwater Combined Communications Center, which receives 911 calls for the region.
