Kendrick Lamar Leads The Pack For 2019 Grammy Award Nominations

They are Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, Janelle Monae, H.E.R. and Brandi Carlile. Drake notched nods for Album, Record and Song of the Year for his double LP "Scorpion", and the first of its No. 1 singles, "God's Plan".

For category 1 - "Record Of The Year", five of the eight nominees are hip-hop acts.

But the big news is the high number of women nominees, after being largely left out a year ago. Dallas' Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent, received two nominations, for Best Alternative Music Album for "Masseduction" and for Best Rock Song (shared with Jack Antonoff) for the album's title track. "I feel like I learned a lot about myself in making this record and I feel like I got to the heart of my own matter more so than I ever have".

Recording Academy chief Neil Portnow was criticized earlier this year when he blamed women for their lack of representation at the Grammys. He later acknowledged that it was a "poor choice of words", and it forced the academy to launch a new task force focused on inclusion and diversity.

In other categories, Toronto's Daniel Caesar appeared in the R&B performance category for the second consecutive year, this time for the song Best Part, a duet with California-based singer H.E.R.

Up for top song, a songwriter's award, are SZA, Ella Mai, Carlile, Sarah Aarons and Lady Gaga.

Dan + Shay scored a nod for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their song "Tequila" while group member Dan Smyers was also nominated for Best Country Song for helping to pen the tune. Six of the eight nominees are female: H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Dua Lipa, Margo Price, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith. The OVO superstar's Scorpion is also in the Album Of The Year race.

"That's inspirational for other young women. You can play an instrument, '" she said on Friday. "So, to be in that position where I can tell other little girls, 'You can do this too" - it's special".
