Canada arrests CFO of Chinese tech giant Huawei

The Chinese Embassy said it "has lodged stern representations with the U.S. and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms. Meng Wanzhou".

The woman was apprehended on Saturday and is awaiting the bail hearing scheduled for Friday, Canada's Department of Justice spokesman Ian McLeod told The Globe and Mail.

Officials for the Canadian and US Justice Departments did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Since at least 2016, USA authorities have been reviewing Huawei's alleged shipping of US -origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of USA export and sanctions laws.

A spokesman for Canada's Justice Department said Wednesday that Meng was arrested in Vancouver on Dec 1.

McLeod says further details can not be provided on the case because a publication ban is in effect at Meng's request. "The ban was being sought by Ms. Meng". Its equipment is banned in the United States and Australia and in the UK it is rigorously tested by the Government at a guarded facility.

She was arrested because she attempted to evade the trade embargo placed by the United States on Iran, The Globe and Mail reported, citing a Canadian source with knowledge of the arrest.

Skycom was described by Huawei as one of its "major local partners", although the Chinese company said neither it nor Skycom ultimately provided the HP equipment.

In 2016, the Commerce Department sought information in regards to Huawei possibly sending USA technology to Syria and North Korea as well.

The Wall Street Journal reported the USA government was trying to persuade companies in allied countries to avoid Huawei.

American officials have talked to their counterparts in Germany, Italy, and Japan - countries where Huawei products are widely used. BT still planned to use Huawei phone mast antennas and some other products from Huawei, it said.

The advent of 5G promises to make superfast internet connection available to consumers. It surpassed Apple in smartphone sales in the second quarter of this year, leaving it behind only market leader Samsung.

However, earlier this year, the United States banned American firms from selling parts and software to ZTE for seven years, a move which brought the company to its knees.

Huawei's comments came in response to the FCC's notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) for Protecting Against National Security Threats to the Communications Supply Chain Through FCC Programs.

As of August 2018, USA federal government agencies are barred from purchasing Huawei equipment. Huawei has denied the links.
