Ukraine tried to drag Germany into war against Russian Federation

President Vladimir Putin may be seeking to maximise his gains in the Black Sea region at a time when Washington is preoccupied with China and Iran, and when Europe is fragmenting politically and economically.

Speaking before the meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged Russian Federation to release the Ukrainian sailors and ships and to allow free navigation and unhindered access to Ukrainian ports in the Sea of Azov.

Its president, Petro Poroshenko, imposed martial law on November 26 in parts of the country deemed most vulnerable to Russian attack.

A statement Tuesday attributed to Ukraine Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan said the Berdyansk and Mariupol ports have been partially unblocked, adding that ships are coming and going through the Kerch Strait towards Ukrainian ports.

The content of this treaty forms Russia's legal basis for its recent use of force in the Azov Sea and Kerch Strait.

On Sunday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called on Germany and Western allies to boost their naval presence in the Black Sea to deter Russian Federation from further aggression, saying Moscow was trying to blockade Ukrainian ports on the Sea of Azov.

The Ukrainian minister said that 17 ships were queuing to enter the Sea of Azov and one was set to leave, while another nine ships were still in port.

He continued: "Then I think we also have to remember that because of the aggressive actions of Russian Federation against Ukraine, illegally annexing Crimea, destabilising eastern Ukraine and now we have also seen what they have tried to do in the Sea of Azov. It must also allow freedom of navigation and unhindered access to Ukrainian ports in the Sea of Azov".

"We have discussed the issue of sending ships to the Sea of Azov", Klimkin told reporters after the meeting.

Ukraine is demanding that Russian Federation release crew members of the seized ships.

The Kremlin on Monday called absurd a Ukrainian accusation it has designs on the Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk in order to create a land corridor between Russian-annexed Crimea and eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

On Nov. 25, three Ukrainian ships attempting to sail through the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov were seized by Russian forces for allegedly violating the Russian border.

The Ukrainian border service said Saturday that around 100 Russian citizens had been denied entry since the border restrictions went into effect Friday. Warships have extended their presence in the Black sea from 80 day last year to 120 this year so far. However, Russia claimed it had been forced to act as Ukrainian ships illegally entered its waters to "intentionally" provoke a conflict.
