Paris has hosted Luka Modric's end of year party as he was given the Ballon d'Or awarded by France Football as the best player in the world in 2018.

But Modric's impact in Croatia's run to the World Cup final, coupled with Madrid winning the Champions League for the third year in a row, saw him triumph.

Messi finished fifth in the voting, with Griezmann's France team-mate Mbappe a place above the Barcelona star.

The award, which began in 1956, was selected by a panel of global journalists, which included just one representative from each country.

Lionel Messi, like Ronaldo, has won the honor on five occasions but is set to finish outside the top three.

"It's a unique feeling".

Since 2008 Ronaldo and Messi took turns in taking the trophy home, but Modric, the overwhelming favourite for the award, has ended 10 years of them running riot - pipping the pair and the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, Raphael Varane and Eden Hazard. "I have sensational feelings in me at the moment which I find hard to describe".

The Italian news media also said that both Ronaldo and Griezmann will not be in attendance at the gala on Monday, December 3.

The teenage talent has enjoyed a sensational year, winning a plethora of domestic titles with the Parisians, as well as lifting the World Cup with Les Bleus in Russian Federation over the summer.

His incredible goal in the final even made him the second teenager in history to score in a World Cup final.

It will crown a big year for Modric who has already won UEFA Best Player in Europe. Canadian forward Christine Sinclair was one of 15 players up for the women's Ballon d'Or, which was won by Norway's Ada Hegerberg.
