His son, George W. Bush, served two terms as president from 2001 through 2009.

In February 2011, then President Barack Obama awarded Bush the highest USA civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom.

Just one day after the former first lady's funeral, Bush was hospitalised for blood infection on April 23, and remained there for 13 days.

He was also chosen to serve as vice president to President Ronald Reagan from 1981 until 1989. The two had been married for 73 years. Being the youngest pilot in the navy when he began flying, he flew 58 combat missions during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.

He Graduated in 1948 with a degree in economics (Yale University).

He had joined politics in 1964 after starting a Texan oil business and becoming a millionaire by the age of 40.

As one of his first major decisions, Bush chose to remove Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega - a former USA ally turned global drug lord - from power.

His pronouncement soon proved prophetic, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union occurring early in his presidency.
