Here’s How UCF Makes The College Football Playoff

With Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame facing unranked opponents, the best chance for the playoff picture to change comes in the rankings right behind these team. Rivalry week has a history of major upsets that throw the College Football Playoff rankings into chaos but the only big change will come if Ohio State upsets MI.

The remaining rankings speak to how highly the committee regards the SEC among all other conferences, as three-and-four-loss teams like Florida and Mississippi State find themselves in the top-20, somehow. Ohio State beat Maryland 52-51 in overtime while UCF beat Cincinnati on Saturday. Georgia and Oklahoma are the first two out of the playoff picture.

In the spirit of making lemonade from the boring lemons we've been handed these last few week (in the CFP rankings department, of course; there's been plenty of fun elsewhere), let's see what each real playoff contender must do to reach the final four if the universe acts in a relatively normal way, i.e. most of the favorites win.

A win over Florida State might not guarantee a New Year's Six bowl game for the Gators. U of M, 10-1 overall, leads all Big Ten teams in the poll, with Ohio State at number 10, Penn State at number 12 and Northwestern at number 19. Expecting an undefeated Notre Dame team makes the playoff, that leaves one spot remaining for the Knights to possibly squeak in. And Alabama and Georgia will contest the Southeastern Conference title in Atlanta.

The two semifinals, which rotate yearly, will take place in Miami at the Orange Bowl and in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 29.
