Russian candidate is front-runner in election for Interpol’s new president

The U.S. seems committed to Interpol for now, but has pulled out of UNESCO and worldwide accords under President Donald Trump.

Interpol itself won't comment on the upcoming vote.

The election of the worldwide organisation's next president is set to be held on Wednesday at Interpol's general assembly in Dubai. Interpol did not respond directly to accusations of abuse of its red notice system by the Kremlin.

In July at a summit in Helsinki, President Vladimir Putin made what Trump hailed as an "incredible" offer.

"We really hope that the new leadership of the U.S. Justice Department will adopt an impartial and legal approach to the activities of William Browder", Alexander Kurennoi, a spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office, told reporters at a press conference.

U.S. Sens. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, Marco Rubio of Florida, Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire and Chris Coons of DE have called on President Donald Trump and other countries to reject Prokopchuk's candidacy.
