Florida OKs Voting Rights for Some Felons: What Happens Next

It would not apply to felons convicted of murder and sex offenses.

Any proposed new casinos in Florida will now have to get 60 percent of Floridian's votes on the ballot to get approved.

CNN, citing data from the nonprofit Sentencing Project, estimates that this new ruling could make 1.5 million more people eligible to vote.

Amendment 3, which received about 70percent of the vote, was proposed by Voters in Charge - a political committee largely financed by the Seminole Tribe and Disney. Many are laws that prevent people now in prison from voting while others are laws that prevent people from voting until they have finished parol or probation.

"This is proof when you speak up and work hard and fight for something you believe in, good things will happen", Stratemann said. Bill Nelson has already called for a recount and with good reason, the vote is split nearly directly in two in the state along rural and urban lines (see the NY Times' instructive map).

Shortly after taking office in 2007, then-Republican Governor Charlie Crist persuaded two of the state's three Cabinet members to approve rules that would allow the parole commission to restore voting rights for nonviolent felons without a hearing.

Many states have conservative policies that disenfranchise voters (often, especially, people of color) but Florida is among the nation's worst offenders.

Another gambling amendment Florida voters approved Tuesday was Amendment 3. "Thank you for reaching Florida Rights Restoration Coalition". "A USA district judge found Florida's current system arbitrary and unconstitutional in March, and the case is under appeal", the Pensacola News-Journal reported on Tuesday evening.

As black people are disproportionately represented among former felons, one in five black Florida voters are prohibited from voting due to a criminal record. We applaud the people of Florida!
