Democrats must do more than Trump-bashing if they want to win

Republicans on Tuesday held the Senate in the midterm elections and look set to widen their majority, even as the Democrats make major strides towards seizing back the House of Representatives for the first time in eight years, according to CNN projections.

The results allowed both parties to claim partial victory, but highlighted an extraordinary realignment of USA voters by race, sex and education. Polling experts FiveThirtyEight now project that there is an 86% chance - or six in seven - that Trump will lose control of the House.

The anticipated blue wave was no tsunami but it still delivered Democrats the power to thwart their opponents' agenda at every turn.

In North Carolina, election officials blamed "high humidity" for some voting machines being unable to read ballots.

Republicans hoped voters would reward them, saying a spate of pro-business moves to cut regulations and last year's tax-cut package have sent the economy into overdrive, sent unemployment to historic lows and fueled a rise in average wages.

Some Democrats have already vowed to force the release of his tax returns.

But Republicans are favored to retain their slight majority in the U.S. Senate, now at two seats, which would let them retain the power to approve U.S. Supreme Court and other judicial nominations on straight party-line votes. Victories in contested races across Florida, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Minnesota gave them cause for optimism. But each of these possibilities have been accounted for in pollsters' projections that there is a six in seven chance that Democrats will take back the House - so I'd say it's pretty likely this is what will happen.

While a Democratic House would block some of Trump's plans, a GOP majority enables the president to continue restocking the American judiciary with judges that rule according to the Constitution rather than social agendas.

If Democrats capture the House, they could block Mr Trump's policy agenda and launch congressional investigations into Trump's administration, including his tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and the nature of his 2016 campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

Exit polling shows that over two-thirds of voters explicitly said that one reason for the vote for the U.S. Senate had to do with President Trump. Health care was mentioned by nearly twice as many voters as the next most common issue, immigration.

"An American voter is not happy with one party being in charge", he said.

In what was widely seen as a referendum on Trump's first two years in office, the projection, if confirmed, would cloud the prospect of his re-election in the 2020 presidential election.

"I have worked at this poll the last three elections and this is the biggest turnout ever", said Ms Bev Heidgerken, 67, a volunteer at a polling place in Davenport, Iowa. Minnesota and Montana are close, with a less than five percent gap between approval and disapproval.

Americans voted for all 435 seats in the House, and female candidates stole the spotlight in an election cycle that had been billed as the Year of the Woman.

The President planned to have dinner with his family and to watch the results, which could have a profound impact on the rest of his term and could reshape Washington's balance of power, in the residence of the White House.

There was another blow for Democratic morale as Texas Sen.

Republican Mike Braun captured incumbent Joe Donnelly's seat in Indiana, Republican Kevin Cramer beat incumbent Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota and Republican Josh Hawley defeated Democrat Claire McCaskill in Missouri.

Despite capturing the House, Democrats were unable to takeover the Senate, where Republicans maintained a firm majority. The GOP's grip on high-profile governorships in Florida, Georgia and Wisconsin were at risk as well.
