Divers In Indonesia Find Crashed Airliner's 'Black Box'

Divers have located a "black box" from Lion Air flight JT610, which crashed into the Java Sea earlier this week with 189 people aboard, offering a critical piece of evidence in the investigation into what caused the disaster.

Indonesia stepped up a hunt for the black box of a crashed Boeing Co. jet after four days of scouring the sea only yielded a damaged flight data recorder, prolonging the mystery on what could have downed the Lion Air plane.

Two passengers on the plane's previous flight from Bali to Jakarta on Sunday described issues that caused annoyance and alarm.

Haryo Satmiko, deputy chairman of the National Transport Safety Committee, said evidence shows the jet hit the water at "tremendous speed" before breaking apart. The airline gave no reason for the personnel change but said in a news release it was made at "the instruction and the decision of the (Indonesian) Transportation Ministry".

Boeing officials were expected to meet with Lion Air on Wednesday, after Indonesia ordered an inspection of the U.S. plane maker's 737-MAX jets.

Officials have now reportedly deployed "pinger locators" to find the recorder.

On the previous flight from Denpasar to Jakarta on Sunday, October 28, the 737 had experienced the same erratic values (BELOW WHERE HIGHLIGHTED) in altitude and airspeed after takeoff.

"We will also start evacuating parts of the plane that are larger in size - those with 100kg, 1 tonne in weight - using equipment we have now prepared", he told local radio station Elshinta in a live interview on Friday, ahead of the search operation, now into its fifth day.

But pilot and engineering sources told Reuters the FlightRadar24 data for both flights, while not conclusive, could be a potential indicator of something wrong with the pitot-static systems.

The crash has renewed concerns about the safety of Indonesian airlines, soon after United States and European regulators removed prohibitions against them.

Hadi Tjahjanto said, "This morning I've been briefed by the head of Search and Rescue Agency about the strong possibility of the location coordinates" of Flight 610.

The flight, which crashed into the water about 30 metres to 40 metres deep, had requested to return to base shortly before losing contact, said AirNav Indonesia spokesperson Yohanes Harry Sirait.

Initial reports said the plane's flight data recorder had been found but a transport safety official quoted by Reuters news agency said later it was unclear whether the damaged device was the flight data unit or the cockpit voice recorder.

It shows passengers' boarding passes being checked and people walking along a concourse and then down stairs with bright red and white Lion Air jets visible on the tarmac. Lion had operated 11 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and it had no plan to ground the rest of them, he said.

Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 from flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade. Investigators say that is also indicated by the search and rescue effort finding many body parts rather than intact victims. The Federal Aviation Administration lifted the ban in August 2016.

Note, there are no Ukrainians in the list of passengers and crew members of the Indonesian Lion Air plane. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing region of more than 600 million people.
