PM Modi reaches Kevadiya to unveil Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Statue Of Unity

Iron was procured from around the country to commemorate the "Iron Man of India".

"The "Statue of Unity" [of Patel] is a symbol of both the unity of hearts and the geographical integrity of our motherland".

At the launch ceremony, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries will pour soil and Narmada water into a Kalash to mark the dedication of the "Statue of Unity" to the nation. He commissioned the statue when he was the state's chief minister in 2010. It will be more than 50 metres taller than China's Spring Temple Buddha, the world's current record holder, at 128 metres. The Sardar Patel statue, twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty, has been built at a cost of Rs. 2,989 crore and is located in Gujarat, 3.2 km downstream of the Narmada dam.

"Two traits synonymous with Sardar Patel are trust and integrity".

The Prime Minister said although India had no direct connection with the First World War but it was an important event because Indian soldiers fought bravely and played a very big role by sacrificing their lives. "Is remembering country's great personalities a crime?" he asked. From an early age, Ram Vanji Sutar had known that he wanted to be a sculptor and he grew up dreaming of creating a statue that would dwarf French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's 305-ft neoclassical robed female figure.

The Statue of Unity project, barring bronze cladding which is a fragment of the mammoth work, has been done indigenously, infrastruccture giant Larsen and Toubro (L&T) claimed. He had promised the project despite criticism that India couldn't afford it.

The Prime Minister in his speech hit out at critics and opposition parties, who have questioned the government's decision to construct the memorial.

Modi, who ordered the statue built on the Narmada river when he was Gujarat chief minister, said past year there had been efforts to "belittle" or "remove from history" the contributions of Patel, who helped unite India's 562 princely states as the first home, or interior, minister.

The statue of Sardar Vallabhai Patel can withstand earthquakes measuring up to 6.5 on the Richter scale and wind speed of 60m/sec. He shall visit the Museum and Exhibition, and the Viewers' Gallery. Entry tickets for adults are priced at Rs150 and children (under 15) for Rs60.
