MacBook Air hands-on at the Apple event

The keyboard uses Apple's new butterfly mechanism-something that will please some users and annoy others.

We'll have to see how the new MacBook Air fares in our battery tests with its vastly sharper display. Additionally, Apple claims its latest Retina Display renders 48% more color.

And on Tuesday, it got its first major redesign since 2010.

It's worth reflecting that the MacBook Air redefined the "thin and light" laptop into a machine for the mainstream, leading a movement away from CD/DVD slots and mechanical hard drives and sparking a competing wave of Windows "ultrabooks" which have now become the norm. Not only are the bezels now black (like on iMacs and MacBook Pros), but they are also 50 percent smaller. Weighing in at 2.75 pounds, it's also a quarter pound lighter.

It's a hefty price for the device, especially since you can get current MacBook Airs on Amazon for around £800-£900, and the super-slim MacBook is only £100 more than these new Airs. Aluminium gives strength and durability to the new Mackbook Air, which is made from 100% recycled aluminium.

Apple also introduced a new Mac mini, its traditionally low-priced desktop computer that comes without a screen, keyboard, or mouse. It also boasts wider stereo sound, making music and media more immersive, with three mics so your Facetime or voice calls sound better too.

The new MacBook Pro-style keyboard now incorporates a Touch ID fingerprint scanner for security log-in, with an over-sized trackpad up front and beefier speakers beneath.

Along with the Touch ID sensor to enable Apple Pay and biometric security, the special T2 chip provides additional layers of security and allows always listening "Hey Siri" capability. The T2 also features an SSD controller with on-the-fly data encryption for everything stored on the SSD.

Customers can choose to more RAM and storage.

But a second model of the product climbs to £1,399 and features the same internals but packs 256GB of memory. Both machines have 12 hours of battery life for web browsing, but the new notebook can get up to 13 hours of battery life for iTunes and playback.

All new Macs come with macOS Mojave, the latest version of the world's most advanced desktop operating system, with new features inspired by pros but designed for everyone.

The MacBook Air is a bit of an antique.

According to Apple's guide, the T2 chip includes a hardware disconnect for the microphone that physically prevents the microphone from turning on whenever the lid of your MacBook Air is closed. The MacBook Pro starts at $1,799. Apple started things off talking about the popularity of the Mac, with over half of Mac buyers being new to the mix.

Pricing starts at US$1199 with a 1.6 GHz dual-core i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB SSD. Pre-orders will be shipped, and the laptop will be available at retail, from 7 November.
