Winning Mega Millions numbers from drawing on Tuesday, Oct. 23

One Mega Millions ticket matching all six numbers was sold in Simpsonville, South Carolina.

The Mega Millions jackpot grew so large because it had been almost three months since a player had matched all six numbers and won the top prize.

Lottery officials confirmed this morning that a ticket matching all six numbers was sold in SC. Otherwise, the full $1.537 billion jackpot would be paid in annuities over 29 years.

With a one-time cash option, the unidentified victor will walk away with a cool $913.7 million.

The Mega Millions jackpot grew so large because it had been almost three months since a player had matched all six numbers and won the top prize. The odds of winning BOTH the Powerball and the Mega Millions jackpots are nearly unfathomable.

The previous record for the largest U.S. lottery prize was a $1.586bn (£1.226bn) jackpot for a Powerball draw in 2016. Virginia Lottery officials said as many as 12,700 tickets were being sold per minute at the sales peak in that state. Two of those were sold in Virginia, and one was sold in the USA capital. On Aug. 15, 2012, Donald Lawson, of Lapeer, won a $337 million Powerball jackpot.

The jackpot was just shy of the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot prize shared by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee in January of 2016. That is up from 1 in 259 million a year ago; the change was made to generate larger prizes.

The jackpot was initially estimated to be $1.6 billion.

The Mega Millions lottery game is played in 44 states and several US territories. Winners have up to 180 days to come forward to claim their money.

Unlike in many other countries, USA lottery winnings are taxable at the federal level while some states also impose local taxes.

Following the historic win, the next Mega Millions jackpot was estimated to be worth $40 million, according to the game's website.

Lottery officials estimate about 75 percent of all the possible ticket combinations were sold for this drawing.

There were 34 second-prize winners of $1 million.

Although Tuesday's jackpot was extraordinarily large, it's no fluke. Its previous lottery record haul was a $399 million Powerball jackpot.

The Powerball has climbed since the last winning ticket in NY took home the jackpot in August, and has had 20 drawings since then without a victor.
