China, Japan Vow to Cooperate as Trump Hits Them Both on Trade

This will be PM Modi's third visit to Japan since 2014 for the annual bilateral summit and his 12th meeting with Mr Abe.

"Important universal issues including for example human rights and freedom of the press, those important principles and our position on those issues will not be compromised", Osuga said.

Efforts in advancing China-Japan ties should "persevere unremittingly to prevent the appearance of new twists and turns" so that previous efforts did not go to waste, said Li at a joint briefing with Abe on Friday.

"Japan is also at the forefront of engaging in our national initiatives, such as "Make in India",;Skill India", "Digital India", "Start Up India'".

"With President Xi Jinping, I would like to carve out a new era for China and Japan", Abe said.

Abe also said that Japan and China share significant responsibility to contribute to the stability and prosperity of Asia and the world, and that the two countries shouldering the responsibility together is also a response to the expectations of the global community.

The visit is the first by a Japanese premier since 2011 and is part of a years-long process of repairing relations in the wake of a disastrous falling-out in 2012, when Tokyo "nationalized" disputed islands claimed by Beijing. At the forum, Abe took the opportunity to once again emphasize the need to follow worldwide standards for infrastructure projects and to take into account the financial position of recipient countries.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Beijing on Thursday as both countries try to fix ties that have been riven by disputes over territory, military expansion in the Pacific and World War II history.

Prime Minister Li endorsed how ties between the two countries had pivoted from full-blown rivalry to growing partnership, especially over the last two years.

"Relations between countries are paralyzed".

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said the two sides are expected to also deliberate on cooperation in areas of artificial intelligence, big data, development of unmanned ground vehicle and robotics among others.

Abe told Li that Japan will end official development assistance to China, which Tokyo has continued since the year after the two countries signed the bilateral Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1978, after implementing a new assistance program this fiscal year.

Li Keqiang, premier of China's State Council, also praised the "bright future" of cooperation between the world's second and third largest economies.

"We agreed to promote free trade", said Li of Japan-China ties.

"I have absolutely no hesitation in saying that his (Abe) visit to China will have no impact on India-Japan bilateral relationship..." Even as Trump's trade conflict with China rages, the Japanese auto giant Toyota plans to increase production in China by 20 percent, expanding plants in two major Chinese cities, according to news reports in Japan.

In the past year, China has stepped up its outreach to Japan and others as it locked horns over trade with the United States.

The regional security situation will be another area of discussion in view of Japan's interest in developments in the Korean Peninsula and in North Korea.

Kunihiko Miyake, a former Japanese diplomat who is now visiting professor at Ritsumeikan University, said: "Nobody thinks ties with China have completely recovered, and they shouldn't think that".
