Xbox One October 2018 Dashboard Update Has Rolled Out With New Avatars

You will see your own Avatar on your profile, as well as on the profile pages of anyone who has chosen to represent themselves as an Avatars. This Xbox One X bundle packages Microsoft's UHD HDR beast with a matching Charcoal version of the Amazon Echo Dot - and, of course, National Basketball Association 2K19. Microsoft designed its new Avatars to be more inclusive, and there's a built-in Avatar Store where you can purchase new Avatar items.

One of the notable new features in the update is support for Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, which can be enabled via a skill. You don't have to adopt a new Xbox Avatar if you don't want to, as you can keep your old Avatar if you so wish, but there are new items in the Avatar Store, including licensed props from the likes of Halo and Gears of War.

At launch, you'll be able use Alexa to adjust the volume of the console, launch games and apps, start and stop broadcasts on Mixer and capture screenshots, with more functionality coming further down the road. The Xbox Skill is now available to download at Amazon. To set up Alexa, say, "Alexa, open Xbox". To learn more about this new feature, see our previous post.

The update also adds support for Dolby Vision HDR streaming for both the Xbox One X and Xbox One S. Diving into the console's advanced video settings, a single checkbox enables the feature.

This update rolled out on Thursday, and Xbox Avatars are finally returning in an upgraded form, Cortana and Alexa are getting some new skills, and Dolby Vision support will be added to Xbox One S and Xbox One X. While it's not exactly a new language, the firm also added Australian English.
