STRAWBERRY CRISIS: NSW Mum Finds Needles In Punnet Purchased At Local Coles

"I found the other half of the needle in the strawberry".

"It snapped in half, my knee-jerk reaction was to swallow, and I found the other half of the needle in the strawberry", he said.

NSW Police Force has received reports of strawberries contaminated with sewing needles and pins purchased at supermarkets at Tweed Heads, Taree, and Wingham. "We are now at the ER because he subsequently started experiencing severe abdominal pain", Gane wrote. "But at this stage, please cut them up and just look to make sure they haven't been contaminated", Dr Young said.

"We can assure customers that none of the fruit in our stores is in any way associated with the recall underway in Australia".

Police have been unable to confirm whether the contaminated products are linked to the original contamination in Queensland or a copycat, however they are urging anyone who has purchased contaminated products to take the punnet to their local police station immediately for forensic testing. "They suspect it is foul play, but unsure whether it was via the supplier, Woolworths, or a customer".

Dr Young said anyone who swallowed a needle was at risk of it getting caught up in their stomach.

Police have released a photo in relation to the suspected copycat incident and continue to investigate it.

"Until advised, consumers should cut up strawberries before consuming them", Queensland Health later said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Police in Queensland, where the affected strawberries were grown, believe the contamination is deliberate.

The Queensland Strawberry Growers Association believes a disgruntled farm worker may be responsible but police say they are investigating all aspects of the strawberry transit process.

This recommendation came about after the fourth case of contamination came about in Gatton, west of Brisbane.

She had already sent her nine-year-old to school with uncut strawberries, but when cutting more strawberries for her 12-month-old at home, she found a needle.

"He obviously bit into it, felt it, pulled it out and told the teacher "there was a needle in my fruit" and everyone was sort of gobsmacked as to why?"

"I said I need you to stop him from eating the strawberries.

It wasn't five minutes later they rang back and said it was too late, he'd actually bitten into it", she told 9 News.

Where have people found needles in their strawberries?

"Farmers are really nervous about it, obviously, and devastated something as terrible as this would happen to the industry", Rowling said.

"The recent food safety warnings and product recalls around strawberries on the east coast of Australia do not apply to Western Australia", she said.
