USA airlines prepare for arrival of Hurricane Florence

It could be the most devastating to hit the region in three decades.

"The centre of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and approach the southeastern coast of the United States on Thursday", the NHC said. "However, if the storm does stall, it could drop 10-20" of rain, leading to flooding well inland.

"We do not want to risk one SC life in this hurricane", the governor told reporters. And Virginia's governor ordered a mandatory evacuation for some residents of low-lying coastal areas.

The storm "is too powerful and its path is too uncertain to take any chances", SC governor Henry McMaster said, issuing his state's emergency declaration. More than 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate as the storm advances.

And in both states evacuations already underway.

Florence could bring a life-threatening coastal storm surge, and inland flooding as far north as Virginia, the NHC said.

On Monday, residents emptied shelves of storm essentials - such as bread, water and batteries - at area grocery stores as soon as they were stocked.

With "monumental" rainfall totals of up to 40 inches possible, "the rain from Florence may break all-time state records for rainfall from a hurricane or tropical storm", Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters said.

While Orsi warned "never to say never", she said "it seems unlikely" that Florence's effect on flights "will be on the same level as Harvey, Irma or Sandy". "We live paycheck to paycheck, being a military family, and it's four days until payday".

Similar scenes were repeated up and down the US East Coast, from Virginia to Savannah, Georgia.

The NHC said: "Recent satellite imagery shows that the eye of Florence has become cloud filled and an earlier 0441 UTC microwave overpass revealed a double eyewall structure".

The NHC warned that hurricane force winds may extend 65 kilometers from the center and tropical-storm-force winds may reach 240 kilometers outward.

By noon on Monday, Florence had top sustained winds of 130mph.

But, as is the case with all hurricanes, Florence has undergone some changes. SC emergency management officials said they were "preparing for the possibility of a large-scale disaster".

Almost all major airlines have enacted fee waiver policies ahead of the storm, which typically allow travelers flying to, through, or from storm-affected areas to rebook their flights within a certain time period free of charge.

"Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and gable ends". Trees can be snapped or uprooted.

The storm's first effects were already apparent on barrier islands as risky rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway.

"We here in North Carolina are bracing for a hard hit", Cooper said Monday.

Evacuation orders for low-lying areas were issued Monday and continued Tuesday.

But a weather formation known as a high-pressure ridge is parked over the U.S. East coast, preventing Florence from doing the normal turn, said University of Miami hurricane expert Brian McNoldy. "So, that high pressure is now driving Florence toward the East Coast", he said.

People were preparing for the worst, even if they didn't evacuate.

The ocean waters that Florence is travelling over are about 2.7 degrees (1.5 degrees Celsius) warmer than normal, McNoldy said.

Name SearchWatch Service' Tom Roberts said he sold 150 gas cans in two hours Monday, along with generators, plywood, rope, manual can openers, sand bags and a plethora of other items.

Some strengthening is expected during the next 36 hours, and Florence is expected to be an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday.

Many local residents remember the devastating flooding impacts from Hurricane Matthew. In September of 1998 there were 4 hurricanes in the Atlantic at the same time.
