New Stats Support Umpire Carlos Ramos In Dispute With Serena Williams

In Saturday's U.S. Open final, chair umpire Carlos Ramos issued three code violations to Williams, including one for verbal abuse after she called him a "thief", which cost her a full game; she went on to lose to Japan's Naomi Osaka.

U.S. Open women's champion Naomi Osaka is back in Japan celebrating not only her landmark victory, but also a sponsorship deal with auto manufacturer Nissan.

The Times reported that the incident has sparked outrage among umpires and they are coming together as a profession.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Women's Tennis Association (WTA), however, supported Williams' accusations that Ramos' actions were based in sexism. A short time later, she smashed her racket in frustration and was docked a point.

In addition to her extraordinary tennis skills as displayed in her dominant performance against Williams in her first Grand Slam win, the Japanese-born athlete with a Haitian father is now also being recognized for her broad global endorsement appeal.

"Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis".

'I've said far worse', McEnroe admitted. Viewers could not have guessed that she won by looking at her crestfallen, teary-eyed expression throughout the immediate aftermath of the match. Ramos, meanwhile, was paid £370 ($480) as a "standard daily rate" for umpiring, The Times says.

Speaking to Tribuna Expresso earlier this week in his native country, Ramos indicated he was at peace with his decisions because he didn't pick and choose when to apply the rule book. Retired umpire Richard Ings confirmed to ESPN that umpires feel that Ramos is being vilified. "You owe me an apology!" she shouted repeatedly.

"It's a delicate situation, but umpiring "a la carte" doesn't exist. Don't you worry about me", the 47-year-old is quoted as saying in the newspaper.

Strycova stands as one of the first players on the circuit to publicly criticise Williams for her behaviour at flushing meadows, and the Czech also threw her support behind Ramos who she believes acted out of necessity.

Coming to his defense was the International Tennis Federation, which in a tweet hailed his professionalism. It added that US Open organizers confirmed Ramos' decisions when they chose to fine Williams for the three offenses.
