Jurgen Klopp slams Gary Neville's Champions League advice

Jurgen Klopp slams Gary Neville's Champions League advice

The Reds have made a brilliant start to the new season and have won all four of their opening four Premier League games to leave them joint top of the table.

"I think the top two are City and Liverpool and then there are three clubs fighting it out for places in the top four are Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham".

Given the manner of the defeat at Wembley last season, Liverpool will be desperate to beat Spurs when they travel to London tomorrow.

"Last year, for example, we had no chance to focus on one competition because we had to qualify for the Champions League and I don't think that even Gary Neville would have said, 'Quarter-finals of the Champions League, let City win".

"Everyone knows I'm no Liverpool fan but I respect, understand and appreciate what's going on there", he said.

Alisson and Keita are set to play a crucial role all season for the Anfield outfit and there is real excitement among the Liverpool camp that this could finally be their year to land some much-needed silverware. To focus on one competition can only be if you are out, or almost out, or of if it's late in the season.

Furthermore, with both the Premier League and Champions League to contend with, as well as the domestic cup competitions, Spurs may suffer fatigue as the season wears on, which could prove costly.

"Facing up against the likes of PSG, against Napoli and to sit here in September and tell these players to never mind that, I think flies in the face of everything that you sold them on", he concluded.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has responded strongly to suggestions from Gary Neville that his side should effectively throw in the towel on competing for the Champions League this term to focus on winning their first Premier League title. We did not play every game on the front foot.

"It's absolutely no problem". Fabinho is full of energy and desire.

Spurs midfielder Dele Alli will also miss Saturday's game against Liverpool after injuring a hamstring. It's not nice to tell him he's not involved but he's come from another league with a different system, it takes time.

"The plan was - and is still - he will make us better and that is what we are working on".

"I think you should go for all competitions", he said.

"I could have changed five or six players that day", he added on Lovren's 20th minute substitution.
