Del Potro backs Djokovic to break Federer’s Grand Slam record

After his 2018 US Open final win over Juan Martin del Potro, the Serb Novak Djokovic said: 'I would like to congratulate Juan Martin for what he's done through these years through all his problems.

Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro have begun their U.S. Open matchup between a pair of past champions.

Novak Djokovic won the U.S. Open on Sunday, the 14th Grand Slam title of his career.

While many hope del Potro gets that second major someday, including Djokovic - he is severely owed by the tennis gods - his foe was simply too good in the opening set.

Del Potro hailed the victor after losing in his first final since winning the Wimbledon Title in 2009. He was drained from 3 hours, 16 minutes trying to find weaknesses in perhaps the best defender in tennis, especially after losing the 22-point, 20-plus minute game in the second set that was the match's pivotal moment.

When it ended, thanks to a three-game closing run by Djokovic, he flung his racket away and landed on his back, arms and legs spread wide.

This is Djokovic's second straight Grand Slam singles title this season following Wimbledon 2018 and a 14th overall to tie American Pete Sampras for third all-time.

Federer's haul of 20 Grand Slams seems to be in the distance, yet Djokovic is now within range of Nadal's 17.

Del Potro said he was most proud of not giving up in pursuit of another Grand Slam final, adding: "I got it after nine years, which is incredible to me because the US Open is my favourite tournament and I'm proud of that".

When Djokovic won his 13th Grand Slam at Wimbledon in July it was particularly pleasing as it was his first success at a major since he finally picked up the missing French Open trophy he so relished in 2016. "I don't know when will be my last tournament in this career, but I'm excited to keep surprising myself doing things like this".

"For me.I think it's still a win, so I'm just going to count it as that".

For quite some time after that Djokovic looked towards Del Potro's singing friend with utmost anger, unable to get them out of his head and that showed on the court.

"I was so close to the desired level, and then I completely underplayed that match".

Amid increasing noise between points and serves, which prompted frequent interventions from chair umpire Alison Hughes, the previously assured Djokovic - who missed the tournament a year ago due to an elbow injury - appeared agitated.

The nine-year gap between his first and second Grand Slam finals is the longest ever in the men's game. Ahead 40-0 he wasn't able to capitalize on any of the three game points, then went onto make two forehand errors to surrender his serve.

In the tiebreak, Del Potro looked susceptible to forehand errors and Djokovic showed huge courage and quality to take it away from Del Potro, going up 2-0 in the final. 1 and 2, respectively, while Germany's Angelique Kerber climbed one place to 3.
