White House Buckles in For Hurricane Florence

Hurricane Florence is moving closer to the coast of North and SC, where it is expected to bring a life-threatening storm surge, the US National Hurricane Center said.

Florence, now a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (209 km/h), was previously expected to travel north, up the North Carolina coast, after making landfall, according to the statement.

The first rains and strong winds from Hurricane Florence began hitting North Carolina early Thursday, leading the way for a storm packing 110-mph winds.

Florence is becoming more of a threat to more people - now including some in Georgia - in more ways with a giant dose of uncertainty on top. "It's the most deadly part of the hurricane that comes in - it causes the most amount of destruction".

And during last year's Hurricane Irma, officials said 12 people died in Florida's Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills after temperatures in the nursing home rose to 99 degrees.

Jeff Byard, an administrator at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said: "Do you want to get hit with a train or do you want to get hit with a cement truck?"

The state has set up the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund at rebuild.nc.gov to accept hurricane relief donations, Cooper said. "In the past, it's been safer to leave them there", a state department of corrections spokesman said. The Category 4 storm is likely to produce "catastrophic" flooding in the eastern Carolinas, as well as destructive winds.

In the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a Category 2 event.

A three-minute video that NASA published Wednesday morning shows Hurricane Florence from a space-station's-eye view, as a camera some 250 miles above earth pans slowly over the storm.

"We hope to have something left when we get home", she said.

Tropical Storm "Isaac" was spotted east of the Lesser Antilles and expected to pass south of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba, while Hurricane "Helene" was moving northward away from land.

More than one million people have been ordered to evacuate the coastlines of the Carolinas and Virginia.

"This is a horrific nightmare storm from a meteorological perspective", University of Georgia meteorology professor Marshall Shepherd said. On Tuesday, William "Brock" Long, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Florence "could be the most unsafe storm in the history of the Carolinas".

US President Donald Trump declared states of emergency for North and SC and Virginia, opening the way for federal aid. "Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (815 km)". Unsure of what they might find when they return home, the couple went shopping for a recreational vehicle.

Almost 1000 prisoners in SC will not be moved from their cells, despite a mandatory evacuation order in the area.
