Hurricane Olivia heads toward Hawaii as Norman slows

It's moving westward at 12 mph about 595 miles east-northeast of Hilo and 760 miles east of Honolulu.

The NHC said Olivia will weaken further over the weekend, and possibly downgrade to a tropical storm by Tuesday.

In today's area synopsis, the National Weather Service says, "Light and variable winds will continue through Monday as Tropical Storm Norman tracks northward and away from the state". Hurricane Olivia, now a strong Category 2 storm with 110 miles per hour winds, likely will make landfall as a tropical storm on either the Big Island or Maui on Wednesday, CBS News weather producer David Parkinson said. The agency reports that a weaker system will steer Olivia more westerly with less of a turn towards the islands; and a stronger system will bring the system in a more SW path towards the islands. Gov. David Ige said "We're monitoring this storm closely and taking steps now to ensure that we're prepared for its impacts to the state". Still, heavy rain and tropical storm-force winds could threaten the state. Hurricane Isaac is now located 1,305 miles west of the Windward Islands with sustained wind speeds of 75 mph. Large swells generated by Olivia are expected to continue to increase near the main Hawaiian Islands, and surf will to build as Olivia approaches, and may become damaging on some exposed east facing shores Tuesday or Wednesday.

Hawai'i County will not be distributing sandbags until active flooding occurs.

Helene, now classified as a tropical storm, is, according to the latest NHS advisory, expected to become a hurricane soon as well.

Most models now show the system tracking over the Big Island as a Tropical Storm on Wednesday; however the long-term forecast continues to undergo revisions as new data is evaluated with each update.
