Mueller Will Accept Some Written Answers From Trump ZlotoNews

President Donald Trump claimed in an interview that there are "100 pictures" of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and former FBI Director James Comey "hugging and kissing each other".

Mueller's decision to accept at least some written responses represents a concession to Trump's legal team, which since December has resisted the special counsel's efforts to interview the president.

The note is the latest move in months of back-and-forth about the terms and scope of any interview might give, which raises sticky separation-of-powers questions that also came up 20 years ago in the Ken Starr probe of President Bill Clinton.

Some of Trump's advisers viewed Mueller's new letter as a sign of begrudging acceptance that he would lose a legal battle to compel the president to testify.

Rudy Giuliani says the White House would likely attempt to block a full public release of Robert Mueller's anticipated final report about the Russian Federation investigation ― bolstering long-held fears that the special counsel's ultimate findings may never see the light of day. Trump's team has not yet responded to the offer. However, he has said in previous interviews that he is "looking forward" to an interview with Mueller and that "he would love to do it".

There is some general sense among the Trump lawyers and Mueller's team that the process could reach its conclusion by the end of September, though this is not certain.

Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow, the president's personal attorneys, declined comment, as did a representative for the special counsel's office, according to The Washington Post. "We do not discuss the contents of those discussions".

Special counsel Robert Mueller sent a letter to Trump's legal team expressing a willingness to accept written answers to some questions, a source says.

"But", she added, "that's a bit like firing Mueller, as many Republicans have warned - it just ups the case for impeachment because the president appears to be hiding something". That's an effort that could lead to a Supreme Court challenge by the White House.

Sources describe a lengthy response from Mueller with a strong emphasis on requesting written answers as it relates to the original mandate of the investigation - Russian meddling in the 2016 elections. Giuliani has said Trump does not recall asking Comey to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn and he does not want the president to be accused of lying about the episode.
