Social Media Shares Drop as Execs Take the Hill

"I'm deeply disappointed that Google ― one of the most influential digital platforms in the world ― chose not to send its own top corporate leadership to engage this committee", he said.

Top leaders from Facebook and Twitter participated in a congressional hearing with the Senate Intelligence Committee Wednesday morning, where they faced an onslaught of questions about the ways in which these tech giants handle the personal information of millions of Americans.

Many senators expressed anger at Google, which was represented in the hearing room by an empty chair next to Sandberg.

In prepared testimony released by Facebook Tuesday, Sandberg said that Facebook was "too slow to spot" Russia's purported influence operation and "too slow to act". "And that's not possible right now", she said.

The news is the latest sign that the United States government, which has so far been reluctant to regulate internet companies, is scrutinising them more closely.

Dorsey and Sandberg agreed that fake accounts are the root of many of their problems. Sandberg also added that Facebook employs 20,000 security and safety personnel who work 24 hours a day.

The company had said it would designate its senior vice president of global affair, Kent Walker, to attend the hearing (he's appeared previously before the panel).

Twitter's Dorsey also will testify at a House of Representatives hearing on Wednesday that the company "does not use political ideology to make any decisions", according to written testimony also made public on Tuesday.

He spoke with Dorsey about being an "equal opportunity shadow-banner" that isn't exclusively targeting Republicans and asked, "Twitter undertook no behavior to selectively censor conservative Republicans or conservative voices on your platform, is that correct?"

"We believe strongly in being impartial, and we strive to enforce our rules impartially", he said.

Laura Rosenberger, the Director of the Alliance for Securing Democracy at the German Marshall Fund, told ABC News that likely won't be a problem for the Senate Intelligence Committee, as that committee in particular has been "steeped in understanding the challenges posed by foreign interference". "Congress is going to have to take action here", Warner said.

In the statement, a shorter version of which Sandberg will read Wednesday, Sandberg outlines steps Facebook is taking to prevent future foreign meddling in elections through its platform.
