Google Chrome marks 10th birthday with new look, new tricks

Chrome is now 10 years old and to celebrate Google has pushed out a big new update. For example, the updated tab shape and color palette makes it easier to see the tab icons, which will make it easier for you to find which of the (too many) tabs you now have open.

The Chrome iOS app now features a sticky toolbar at the bottom of the screen, rather than the top. Chrome 69 introduces a new look, an updated password manager and other improvements for Google's wunderkind.

The company has started putting that warning (in grey) before sites that transmit passwords or credit cards information over HTTP in early 2017, then started doing the same with FTP sites and, most recently, all HTTP sites.

Chrome now recommends strong passwords when you create an account, meaning you've got no excuse for re-using a password ever again. Chrome will save it, and next time you sign in, it'll be there, on both your laptop and phone.

This make website icons easier to see in tabs and will help users on mobile browse faster, said Google. You can now get answers to your questions directly inside the Omnibox, without having to navigate to a website. Lastly, Google Chrome's Omnibox will soon support searching for Google Drive files, as we spotted last month. All this info is saved to your personal Google account and can be easily accessed via the Chrome toolbar. There's a new tab page with more customisation options, and a horizontal tab switcher as well. And finally, you can now customize the background of a newly-opened tab with your own photo.

Chrome's password manager is improved too. With this release, Google is using the Material Design framework across the desktop, iOS, and Android versions of Chrome.

The massive redesign will see Google move Chrome to a completely different design language.

The team is now, Wired reports, focused on identifying the ways people now use URLs in order to develop an alternative method of addressing pages and sites which will both enhance security and add convenience - though, being described by engineering director Parisa Tabriz as 'an active discussion' at the company, it's unlikely that a URL replacement will be arriving in the immediate future. You can update to Chrome 69 using the built-in updater, or head here to download it directly. Lastly, the Chrome team suggests that the browser will show smarter search results in the future. As a Chrome user for years, I was forced to switch when it went through a much-publicized Mac slowdown, moving to Safari.
