Panhandle hunkers down as Gordon looms offshore

Gordon formed around southern Florida on Monday before it swept across the Gulf of Mexico. Gordon will move toward Monroe, LA this afternoon and we will see a feeder band move over us.

Here is the latest forecast track and timing for Gordon. Rapid weakening is expected after Gordon moves inland. But authorities issued a voluntary evacuation order for areas outside the citys levee protection system, including the Venetian Isles, Lake Saint Catherine and Irish Bayou areas.

Tropical Storm Gordon spent much of Tuesday morning and afternoon hovering less than 20 miles off the coast of the Florida Panhandle as it made its way west towards a MS landfall.

Florence has strengthened to a hurricane in the middle of the Atlantic, making it the third hurricane of the Atlantic season.

At 11 a.m., the center of Florence was located near latitude 19.7 north, longitude 42.5 west. Florence is moving west-northwest near 12 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for southeast Louisiana, and Hurricane Warnings are in effect for coastal MS and Alabama.

Gordon was moving to the northwest at 15 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour.

"As we found out a little rain can turn into big problem if the system stalls over us", Lloyd says.

As of 2 AM Wednesday, all tropical watches and warnings have been dropped for Louisiana.

As of 8 a.m., the National Hurricane Center said Gordon's intensity reached 65 miles per hour, heading in a northwesterly direction towards the MS and Alabama coasts at a fast 17 miles per hour.

Hurricane warnings are now in effect until further notice for coastal MS and Alabama and tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the rest of our viewing area. except for Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes.

The US Coast Guard said the ports of New Orleans and Gulfport and Pascagoula, Mississippi, may have to close within 48 hours. The outages primarily affected Alabama, with cuts also reported around the western edge of the Florida Panhandle around Pensacola as well as in Mississippi.

The Arkansas Department of Transportation was preparing for weather hazards Tuesday by clearing local drainage of debris, coordinating with local officials, checking equipment readiness and availability and filling vehicles and equipment with fuel, the agency said in a statement. In this scenario, the storm could be forced west and move toward the eastern USA coast.
