Peter Dutton Resigns From Cabinet After His Failed Effort to Knife Turnbull

Dutton immediately resigned from the home affairs super ministry, moving to the backbench where he will not be constrained by cabinet solidarity which has seen him lock in reluctantly behind Turnbull's position on the national energy guarantee and tax cuts for big business.

In the lead up to the vote, Turnbull's supporters believed the prime minister has a majority of the party room but Dutton's camp was adamant their candidate can secure at least 43 of the 85 members of the federal Liberal party room.

Australia is due to hold a general election sometime before May next year.

"The government is hopelessly divided, it is at war with itself", she said. Four months later on June 26, Gillard called Rudd's bluff again at 4pm and was gone in a caucus vote a couple of hours later.

A senior political figure described Mr Turnbull as being in "panic mode" and "clearly rattled" about the amount of support he has lost.

Party whip Nola Marino confirmed Mr Turnbull won 48 votes to 35 for Mr Dutton.

'We've had a great period of stability over the past three years.

"I think there might be a second phase strategy here".

Such a situation occurred when Turnbull took the leadership from Abbott, with an "empty chair" challenge in February 2015 returning Abbott but a September 2015 challenge seeing Turnbull take the top job.

Mr Abbott said: 'It's no way to run a government, making absolute commitments on Tuesday and breaking them on Friday'.

On Monday, Mr Turnbull attempted to blunt conflict within the government by abandoning plans to set an emissions reduction target in legislation.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Mr Turnbull was paying the price for making policy on the fly.

"I'm certain he is telling the truth", he told the Nine Network.

Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce yesterday backed Mr Turnbull to remain as leader and welcomed the Government's changes on the contentious energy policy.
