'These Robes Make Me Human': Manafort Judge Apologizes to Prosecutors for Behavior

While President Donald Trump has not played a significant role in the trial, Gates testified on Tuesday that after the election, Manafort recommended a banker who loaned him money to be Trump's Army secretary.

Multiple bank officials said accurate information is essential for them as they decide whether to approve a loan. Gates also provided the first witness testimony that overlaps with Trump's presidential campaign.

Prosecutors have pointed out that Manafort listed the Manhattan loft as a rental on his tax returns in previous years.

The discussion, a so-called "sidebar" conference, was called by Ellis after Manafort's attorney Kevin Downing asked Gates on cross-examination about his sit downs with Mueller's investigators. "Mr. Manafort had the same path".

Manafort's lawyers consistently tried to paint Gates as an unreliable witness, and Gates' last day of testimony was no different.

Legal experts said the judge's criticism of the prosecution has certainly been noticed by the jury, perhaps denting the chance for prosecutors from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team to sell their case that Mr. Manafort engaged in bank and tax fraud.

At times, Ellis has also sided against the defense team, such as when he didn't require former Manafort deputy Rick Gates to answer a question on Wednesday about whether he had four extramarital affairs, not just the one he disclosed the day before.

The prosecution's case against Manafort doesn't rest exclusively on Gates.

She said in another instance, Manafort maintained that there were no mortgages on a separate NY property when there actually were. Gates said it was a mistake a decade ago that he regretted.

Overall, the accountant traced more than $65 million flowing into offshore accounts controlled by Manafort, and she detailed for jurors how more than $15.5 million flowed out to fund his lavish lifestyle between 2010 and 2014.

In a court filing revealed on Thursday, the Mueller team asked the judge to explain to the jury that he was wrong to criticize the prosecutor.

The question was cut off and Judge T.S. Ellis had a private conversation with the attorneys, out of earshot of the jury.

Prosecutors are nearing the end of their case against Manafort.

Paul Manafort's protege on Wednesday wrapped up his testimony after implicating the former Trump campaign chairman and himself in financial crimes and also enduring stinging attacks on his character and credibility. "I am here. I have accepted responsibility and I am trying to change". With the emails, prosecutors sought to show that Manafort controlled undeclared accounts that took in money from his Ukrainian clients and sent money to the US for his personal use.

Gary Seferian, a senior vice president at the Banc of California, said his bank gave Manafort the $1 million loan to rehabilitate and flip properties in the Los Angeles area, in part based on a financial statement for DMP International showing a profit of more than $4 million for 2015.

When Trump asked Perlmutter, a friend and confidante, to help put together his government in December 2016, he agreed to be an outside adviser, selected veterans as his focus, and roped in two other friends, Palm Beach doctor Bruce Moskovitz and lawyer Marc Sherman, Arnsdorf says. After a back-and-forth discussion about how much income should be reclassified as a loan to aid Manafort, they settled on $900,000, she testified.

Gates finished his testimony Wednesday after admitting that his secret life of cheating on his wife was more extensive than he had indicated earlier. I hope Manafort said "thank you" at least.

Under questioning by prosecutor Greg Andres, Gates walked the six-man, six-woman jury through the foreign bank accounts used by Manafort to receive payments from Ukrainian politicians - money that was not reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
