Mendocino Complex Fire now 4th largest wildfire in California history

A utility worker was killed near a Northern California wildfire as crews continued to battle multiple blazes that have forced hundreds more to evacuate, officials said Sunday.

Nine people have been killed so far, including four firefighters.

Critics said his tweets ignored the greater wildfire frequency and severity experienced in California and other Western states from extreme drought and sustained periods of hot, dry weather, in keeping with the forecasts of climate scientists.

A total of almost 3,900 people were fighting the Mendocino Complex Fire, including crews from Arizona, Washington and Alaska.

The blaze has spread to 94,331 acres and firefighters have contained 39 percent, according to authorities. "It's not like we would've taken that water and sprayed it on the forest, and it's not clear how drying out our rivers would reduce our fire risks", Westerling says.

The worldwide fire teams were to arrive in Redding, California, on Monday, said Cal Fire Director Ken Pimlott.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has been puzzled by the claims from the president, according to Fox News.

"I can remember a couple of years ago when we saw 10 to 12,000 firefighters in the states of California, Oregon and Washington and never the 14,000 we see now", he said.

Patti Wold, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service, which is investigating the cause of the Carr Fire, said Sunday the fire was believed to have been caused by a malfunction with a camper trailer but additional details were unavailable.

"Fires do not know boundaries or borders and as a firefighting service we are ready to respond both within Australia and overseas", he said.

Throughout this busy fire season, firefighters here in Northern California have not indicated that a lack of water is hampering their efforts to fight these fires or contributing to their growth. Another 9,000 buildings are threatened. The Thomas Fire scorched a much more densely populated area, burning through 1,063 structures and damaging 280 more. The Complex has now grown to 273,664 acres with 30% containment, and CalFire has confirmed the destruction of 75 residences and 68 other structures - though this number should continue to climb as CalFire teams enter burned out areas to make a careful accounting of the situation.

The fire was 41 percent contained but Bain said it was spreading along deep drainage gullies, which are hard to reach for firefighters.

Trump doubled-down on his earlier comments in a second tweet on Monday in which he accused the state "foolishly" diverting river water into the ocean, which environmental experts say is not accurate. In addition, "the rates of mortality from fire, insects, and disease are about three times as high on national forest lands as they are on private lands regulated under California's strict environmental laws", he said.

Before arriving at the fires, the Aussies and Kiwis went through a brief training period at the NIFC headquarters in Boise, Bilbao said.

The resort owners said in a Facebook post that "at this point it has been confirmed that there is 'massive structural damage.' We are heartbroken and struggling with this news".
