Trump administration reveals plans to roll back vehicle fuel standards

The proposal would freeze USA mileage standards at levels mandated by the Obama administration for 2020, when the new vehicle fleet will be required to hit an average of 30 miles per gallon in real-world driving. "More realistic standards will promote a healthy economy by bringing newer, safer, cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles to USA roads and we look forward to receiving input from the public". They said the average cost of a new automobile is $35,000 and attributed part of that to increasing fuel standards.

Under the current standards, set in a deal with automakers in 2012, cars were supposed to get significantly cleaner between 2022 and 2025, ending up at an average of around 54 miles per gallon and saving drivers gas costs and cutting pollution.

Reforming Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards is a huge tax cut for American auto buyers, up to a $7,200 per vehicle.

Schwarzenegger weighed in shortly after the Trump administration announced that it would move to roll back former President Obama's fuel economy and global warming standards for cars.

The Environmental Protection Agency said in a statement that relaxing mileage standards in the years ahead would give "the American people greater access to safer, more affordable vehicles that are cleaner for the environment".

Pollution from cars, trucks and other on-road vehicles is the California's single-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, according to state data.

The administration billed the proposed rollback from Obama-era fuel efficiency standards as a way to help auto companies and lower vehicle prices for consumers, but critics said the plan would accelerate climate change and increase fuel prices.

"For 48 years - since one of my heroes, then-governor Ronald Reagan, requested it- California has had a waiver from the federal government to clean our own air", Schwarzenegger said in a statement released on Twitter.

The argument may prove a tough sell in court, where attorneys for states and environmental groups will come armed with a wealth of data undermining it.

"There are compelling reasons for a new rulemaking on fuel economy standards for 2021-2026", said Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

But private transportation experts say there are so many factors involved that the 1,000-lives figure is questionable. And with President Donald Trump in the White House, the group would need a veto-proof majority to prevent the changes from going forward, should they actually receive and win a floor vote.

A lower emission standard would make it easier for them to make the vehicles more drivers want. California's standards are followed by 13 other states. The state, and others that have adopted the standard, have vowed to fight in court. Also, and manufacturers are talking about kind of having two different standards. "Their own numbers don't even support what I consider the deceptive messaging they're trying to pass on to people".

The administration also proposed a withdrawal of California's Clean Air Act preemption waiver.

The proposed rule acknowledges that it would result in a 2 percent to 3 percent increase in fuel consumption, the equivalent of about half a million barrels of oil per day, and a small increase in global average temperature and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Now they're only about one-third, with less-efficient trucks and SUVS making up the rest.
