Opposition supporters mass in Zimbabwe capital in tense wait for election results

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has announced 110 seats for Zanu-PF so far, and 41 for MDC Alliance, ZBC state media reported.

The ruling party has secured two-thirds majority in parliament.

The MDC did not immediately respond to the parliamentary figures but its presidential contender Nelson Chamisa, 40, said the presidential results were being faked.

Police officers armed with riot gear guard the entrance to the building where partial election results have been announced in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The opposition claim the results have been rigged in favour of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Channel 4 News have revealed that they were caught in the "perilous" crossfire during yesterday's protests in Zimbabwe.

They also questioned delays in releasing the results of the presidential contest in Zimbabwe's first election since Robert Mugabe was forced to resign following a de facto coup in November after almost 40 years in power.

Many Zimbabweans looked to the vote as a launching pad for a return to the kind of global acceptance and relative prosperity that the country enjoyed in the first part of the rule of Mugabe, who took office after independence from white minority rule in 1980.

"There is no way that ZANU-PF will accept an MDC victory. No amount of results manipulation will alter your will", he tweeted before the army was deployed.

One of the people who was killed by bullets sprayed by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) was identified by the public on social media as a local shop owner who had just closed her store and was walking to her vehicle.

Former MDC finance minister Tendai Biti and ZESN, the main domestic election monitor, said one in five polling stations - more than 2,000 in all - had not physically posted tallies on their doors, as required by law. The electoral commission warned that final results of the presidential first round may not be known until Friday or Saturday. "We thought they were our savior in November but they fooled us", said newspaper vendor Farai Dzengera, admitting that the brief dream of an end to decades of repression was over.

Their allegation: The commission has delayed its full official announcement in order to rig the vote for incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his party, the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front. We have won the popular vote.

Mr Mnangagwa's government, meanwhile, has accused Mr Chamisa and his supporters of inciting "violence" by already declaring he had won the election.

Zimbabwe's much-criticised election authority declared that there had been no rigging of the country's election, after the opposition repeatedly alleged that the vote process was flawed. "Equally, we hold the party and its leadership responsible for any loss of life, injury or damage of property that arise from these acts of political violence which they have aided and abetted", he said.

However, many analysts have said they expect a win for Mnangagwa, a Zanu-PF veteran who replaced long-time president Robert Mugabe after he was ousted in a military coup in 2017.
