Cohen says Trump knew about 2016 meeting with Russian lawyer

"Why would you expect it would be true from someone like Cohen?"

U.S. President Donald Trump' s former attorney asserts that Trump knew in advance about a 2016 meeting between his campaign staff and Russians who claimed to have compromising information on Hillary Clinton, according to NBC News.

Cohen said on Thursday that he was present when Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, informed his father of the Russians' offer, CNN reported on Friday.

But Cohen has no paperwork, audio recordings or other hard evidence to back up his story, CNN also reported.

Raddatz asked Abrams and Chris Christie, a former United States prosecutor and New Jersey governor who is an ABC News contributor, for their thoughts on the Trump team's legal strategy in regard to Cohen.

What would it mean if Cohen actually were to give this testimony to investigators?

Should Mr. Cohen choose to cooperate with investigators, including Mr. Mueller, it's not clear what information he has that they could not gather for themselves or have not already learned on their own. There have been earlier suggestions, from elsewhere, that Trump knew about the meeting. Giuliani also said that Cohen has been described as a "pathological liar".

At the meeting, Trump Jr. was joined by his brother-in-law Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort, who was Trump's campaign chairman at the time.

At one time, Giuliani said he hoped to make a final decision on whether or not Trump testifies by July 4. Trump has denied knowing in advance about the meeting.

To what end, though?

Also as part of his tweet storm, Trump attacked Mueller and his prosecutors for examining past presidential tweets as part of an obstruction of justice investigation.

He told CNN's Chris Cuomo on Thursday night: "I expected something like this from Cohen".

Giuliani's and Trump's opinions of Cohen have evolved in recent months, as the former fixer has been dragged into the public eye over his work for Trump.

Even Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist and top Trump campaign official, said the meeting was "treasonous" and speculated that "the chance that Don Jr. did not walk these (Russians) up to his father's office on the twenty-sixth floor is zero".

Why would it matter if Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting? . They importuned junior policy aides, staffers and others with offers of help and requests for meetings, both directly and indirectly. As we now know, Trump Jr. later acknowledged that it clearly wasn't just about adoption. "We are very confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Mr. Trump, Jr., and on his behalf". The Russians then dispatched the delegation that visited Trump Jr.in NY in June with that aim. Those people denied that Trump had contemporaneous knowledge of the meeting on more than 15 occasions, according to CNN's analysis.

Echoing his previous complaints, the President called Robert Mueller's investigation a "rigged witch hunt" under the control of "13 angry Democrats".

"If you're asking me who do I believe, the president or Michael Cohen, with what Michael Cohen may say - for instance when Michael Cohen says, now, that the president knew about the Russian Federation meeting in advance - I would believe Don Jr. and the president, in light of learning that Michael was taping conversations, the way Michael was conducting himself behind the scenes and in front of all of us", Nunberg said.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein lived to fight another day this week following a formal threat to impeach him in the House. "Anything you can think of", the employee said.

Few battles are ever completely won or lost in Washington, D.C., however, and Rosenstein's victory might only hold for the rest of the summer. "What are they trying to do here?"

House conservatives - including Ryan - still say the Justice Department isn't producing the documents they want about the early stages of the Russian Federation investigation, which means Rosenstein isn't out of the woods completely.
