Trump says it's 'sad' Cohen recorded him

Trump's lawyers waived attorney-client privilege for Trump regarding this recording.

Trump suggested Wednesday that the tape cuts off when he was "presumably saying positive things" and that other clients and reporters were taped by Cohen. "Don't believe me, listen to the tape the way John Dean had a tape that did in Richard Nixon".

In the secretly recorded audiotape from two months before the 2016 election - which was provided to CNN by Cohen's lawyer Lanny Davis - Cohen and Trump apparently discuss buying the rights to a Playboy model's story claiming an affair with Trump.

Cohen, who no longer works for the USA president, is under federal investigation in NY for his business dealings and reportedly whether hush payments violated campaign finance laws.

But in the tape, candidate Trump expresses no surprise when the issue comes up and Cohen talks about essentially reimbursing the company for what it paid McDougal.

Karen McDougal, the model, alleges she began a 10-month affair with Trump in 2006. That was shortly after now First Lady Melania gave birth to their son, Barron.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, McDougal and American Media agreed to a deal in which the tabloid would publish her fitness columns in exchange for keeping the Trump story quiet. Was he taping the conversation to protect himself in case Trump later denied knowledge of Cohen's actions?

But the poor quality of the tape makes it unclear what Trump's intention was. "And it is, just the beginning of, I guess, Lanny Davis's attempt to pay back Hillary Clinton or try to pay back Donald Trump for beating Hillary Clinton".

Cohen is then heard saying "no, no" and it is not clear what is said next.

On the tape, Trump and Cohen can be heard discussing payments to AMI Chairman David Pecker, a friend of Trump's.

Either way, the move has incited a harsh war of words between Davis and Giuliani, and is the final sign that Cohen has flipped on the man he used to say he would take a bullet for.

When Mr Cohen mentions "financing", Mr Trump stops him and says, "Wait a sec, what financing?"

Seems kind of silly to worry about what channel [Melania Trump] watches on TV (any channel she wants btw) or if she heard some recording on the news. According to CBS News legal analyst Rikki Klieman, the tape in and of itself does not indicate a crime was committed but it is "possible" since the recording raises serious questions about whether Mr. Trump violated campaign finance law. "This payment was made to buy the silence of Karen McDougal".
