"Speaking on the occasion of International Yoga Day, Dhananjay Kumar, General Manager of The Suryaa, New Delhi said, our objective is to highlight the importance of yogic asanas in ensuring all round well -being of an individual and to encourage more people to try Yoga and gain from its benefits".

"Yoga is handsome because it is ancient yet modern, it is constant yet evolving", he said. It was the Prime Minister who led the chanting of the first round of "Om". AP Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu participated in a special yoga event in Vijayawada.

President Ram Nath Kovind, who is on the state visit of Suriname will also participate in the International Yoga Day celebration along with the President of Suriname and other dignitaries in Paramaribo at 0700 (local time in Suriname).

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu celebrated the occasion in Mumbai. However, the main celebrations took place at the Zaabeel Park as hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered at the main grounds at 7pm.

Mary Silva, a Philippines national account assistant, said: "I started doing yoga in 2016, and I practise every once in a while".

The Prime Minister said in just three years the International Yoga Day has grown into a worldwide public movement and become an integral part of public life in many countries.

Other cities however held their yoga day earlier than June 21 - the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere - including in Paris, Seoul and in Durban, South Africa last weekend.

Last year, PM Modi had led the yoga day celebrations in Lucknow.
