US Indo-Pacific commander assures Japan over North Korean denuclearisation

As part of Trump's agreement to address North Korea's nuclear program, the two nations committed to sending home the remains of US soldiers, "including the immediate repatriation of those already identified". At the time, however, the president did not name the site.

Reuters reported earlier this week that North Korea could start the process of handing over the remains of troops, including Americans, within the next few days.

"If Kim does not want to abandon his nuclear arms completely, then China will be happy to act as a broker between Pyongyang and the USA".

North Korea has been hit by a raft of United Nations sanctions over its nuclear and missile tests, but the U.S. has offered relief from the punitive measures if its gives up its arsenal.

Mr Kim has made two other recent visits to China, North Korea's main ally and key source of trade and economic assistance.

There has been speculation about Mr Kim's sincerity at the summit with Mr Trump, and whether Pyongyang is really willing to give up its nuclear weapons.

The U.S. official said: "The United States will continue to monitor this site closely as we move forward in our negotiations".

North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because the Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

What little is known about the Sohae site, located in Tongchang-ri, has been pieced together from analysts' assessments and the North Korean state news agency KCNA.

It was reportedly established 2008 with research centers nearby for missile development.

A USA official said on Wednesday that the site Trump referred to then was the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground, a major facility in the western part of the country that has been used for testing engines for long-range missiles. "North Korea has great potential for the future!"

The wording of the agreement on the primary focus of denuclearization was limited to "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", stopping short of the "complete, verifiable and irreversible" denuclearization (CVID) the US was seeking.

South Korea uses a computerized lottery to pick participants for the reunions, while North Korea is believed to choose based on loyalty to its authoritarian leadership.

Xi endorsed Kim's actions in meeting with Donald Trump, and called for a swifter end to sanctions.

"They could quickly come back should we see the dialogue momentum losing speed or North Korea not living up to its denuclearization commitment", she said.

Asked on Wednesday if North Korea had done anything toward denuclearisation since the summit, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters: "No, I'm not aware of that ... obviously, it's the very front end of a process".

Negotiations between the USA and North Korean teams are continuing in an attempt to iron out the details of what was a vaguely worded agreement between the two leaders in Singapore. "I wouldn't expect that at this point". This is hardly ideal for North Korea either.

'They've already blown up one of their big test sites.

Denmark, who left the Defense Department in 2017 and is now director of the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, said he has yet to see any indication that Kim wants to pursue denuclearization or disarmament, and instead appears to be exclusively interested in engaging the world as a nuclear power.
