Woman caught transporting children in dog kennels

Police in Tennessee say a woman has been charged with transporting two young children in pet kennels inside her vehicle.

WMC reported that Leimome Cheeks, 62, of Memphis, was charged with two counts of child endangerment, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison if convicted.

The report also notes that the temperature "reached 95 degrees and there were no vents in the rear of the Ford Explorer".

Neighbors said they were shocked by the incident and said Cheeks recently bought two puppies, which is why the kennels were in her vehicle.

A woman has been arrested after a video shared online showed two children getting out of pet kennels inside the trunk of an SUV. She seems like a nice lady.

The video was filmed by a concerned citizen who passed by.

Ms Cheeks can be seen opening the cage doors to the kennels as the children hop out. I only met her like once maybe twice. "If she did that, then that's out of character for her", one neighbor said. "For them to be in the hot vehicle like that in cages is sad", one neighbour said.

'Leimome Cheeks was interviewed and admitted to riding from Whitehaven to Collierville with the children in the kennel, ' read a police affidavit cited by Cleveland 19 News.

According to an affidavit, the two kids ages 7 and 8 told investigators they were put in the kennels because they were told there was not enough room inside of the vehicle.

Cheeks was being held Sunday in the Shelby County Jail.

Cheeks is expected to appear in court Monday at 9 a.m.
