Woman released after Trump commutes sentence

Alice Marie Johnson's case was championed last week by reality TV personality Kim Kardashian West, who met with Mr. Trump at the White House Wednesday about sentencing and prison reform.

"I'm so just amazed to hear that I'm actually one of his tweets", she told "New Day".

"We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson's future and hopeful that she - and so many like her - will get a second chance at life", she added.

Johnson was freed after serving 22 years in prison.

As for Johnson's next steps, she'll have regular check-ins with her parole officer and is making plans to meet Kardashian West soon.

"I told Alice, 'I'm never going to give up". She and her family drove back to Memphis that same night.

The president commuted her sentence, a move the Justice Department had resisted under President Obama.

The President is still considering pardoning lifestyle maven Martha Stewart, who was convicted in an insider trading case, and commuting the sentence of former IL governor Rod Blagojevich, now serving a 14-year prison sentence on felony corruption charges, along with several others, the White House official told Reuters.

The first person was Shalom Rubashkin, a chief executive of a meatpacking company, who was convicted on charges of fraud and money laundering in 2009 and sentenced to 27 years in jail. He said, 'This is a really long time that she's been in here.

"I am feeling no handcuffs, nothing on me", Johnson, clutching flowers given to her by her family, said through tears to reporters.

Johnson had served more than 20 years in prison.

Also, Kim Kardashian West will be meeting the lady she helped to free from prison.

One of Johnson's attorneys, Brittany K. Barnett, similarly applauded Johnson's clemency.

Last week, Kardashian's meeting with Trump in the Oval Office was widely mocked on social media.

"I want to take this chance to try to magnify what has happened with me so that people will remember that there are other people just like me who are non-violent, first-time offenders who pose no safety risk to their communities", she told "Today". "The only thing I can do is to make him proud that I he did it and not disappoint him", she said.
