Trump Says Singapore Summit Is `One-Time Shot' for Kim Jong Un

Their appearance comes days before a summit between the real leaders in the city-state.

That makes him optimistic that the talks between Mr Trump and Mr Kim will produce lasting change.

It's a technicality, but yes.

It has since been reconfirmed and with days ago the U.S. president has returned to his fire-and-fury rhetoric.

While Trump's allies have called his unpredictability a negotiating strength that keeps his opponents off balance, some White House aides have expressed concern that the president will not heed talking points in his briefing materials.

The summit has fuelled hopes in South Korea that the two leaders may weigh a formal declaration to end the Korean War. Kim is also enjoying a bonanza of both domestic and global prestige by meeting foreign leaders like the South's President Moon Jae-in and Chinese President Xi Jinping, helping to obscure his government's vast crimes against humanity and seemingly proving his claim that nuclear weapons command respect for his country. It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before. In 2005, North Korea was testing long-range missiles while promising to do its utmost to denuclearise the Korean peninsula.

Trump seems to want to.

Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump impersonators, Howard X, left, and Dennis Alan, right, pose for photographs at the Merlion Park, a popular tourist destination in Singapore.

Singapore is easily in the range of the Soviet-era narrow-body Il-62M aircraft that flies on four engines, but some media speculated that it may stop in China as a precaution since it was not frequently used in recent years for such a long distance. And there is a possibility of something like that.

Trump's diplomacy with North Korea has been cheered on by South Korea, whose new leadership is more supportive of engagement with the North than any South Korean government in years. If the summit leads to no breakthrough and Washington again grows frustrated, the Kim regime could quickly find itself again under threat of a preventive military strike. Kim is seeking security guarantees and relief from economic sanctions.

In short, there might not be enough leaders in Singapore.

The armistice was more of a ceasefire agreement, instead of a permanent peace treaty. He also suggested South Korea, China and Japan would be prepared to help the North's economy. Trump's comments on Thursday reflected an understanding of that.

After cutting short his participation over the icy reception, Trump veered within hours from espousing a great relationship with the US allies to tweeting that his host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, had been "Very dishonest & weak" in post-summit remarks.

But this summit might just be a Trump-Kim affair.

Last year, North Korea conducted repeated missile tests, detonated its largest ever nuclear bomb, and said the United States was now within range of its weapons.

"It's a fairly big process". Calling his trip "a mission of peace", the US President framed the meeting as a rare opportunity for Kim and said the US was going in with a positive outlook. I'm sure the North Koreans would sign up for that. I think the G8 would be better, I think having Russian Federation back in would be a positive thing. He clearly likes the idea of winning the Nobel Peace Prize, telling reporters "everyone thinks" he deserves it. "They have no way to obtain information about what South Korea or the United States look like".

Some also question whether the status quo is that bad. Beijing is considering deploying fighter jets to escort Kim Jong Un's aircraft when it is in Chinese airspace, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said, citing an unnamed source in Beijing.

A half-mile away at the Shangri-La Hotel, where the USA side will stay, Secret Service agents, in a casual uniform of khakis slacks and dark polo shirts, milled about the lobby.
