Special prosecutor says Greitens probe continues

The 44-year-old governor made the announcement almost 17 months after taking the oath of the office with a pledge to root out "corrupt career politicians".

The governor said he would step down at 5 p.m. on Friday.

In a news conference on May 29, he said: "The last few months have been incredibly hard, for me, for my family, for my team, for my friends and for many, many people that I love".

Greitens will step down Friday in the face of an impeachment effort, an adverse judicial ruling and criminal investigations. Claire McCaskill, have turned decisively against him.

A special prosecutor is also considering whether to file new charges in a separate case involving allegations of sexual misconduct and blackmail related to an affair between Greitens and his hairdresser in 2015.

Greitens' announcement came after damaging testimony by a former campaign aide to a House committee investigating the governor.

Greitens was under intense pressure from both Democrats and Republicans to resign the governorship he secured in 2016 after the scandals emerged.

A lawsuit against Greitens in Cole County alleges he violated the state's open records law while using a cellphone app that automatically deletes messages after they are read. The chairman of the House investigatory committee and an attorney representing the woman's ex-husband both have said they have shared information with Federal Bureau of Investigation agents looking into the governor. On the same day, Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley opens an inquiry into The Mission Continues, a veterans charity Greitens founded. "Gov. Mike Parson possesses the integrity his predecessor lacked, and House Democrats will offer him whatever assistance we can as he begins the hard task of restoring credibility to state government". The report aired shortly after Greitens delivered his State of the State address.

Many questioned why she would praise the service of someone who took action to reverse the city's long-sought minimum wage increase for St. Louis workers, something Krewson supported. Hawley has said he would reopen the investigation if granted such authority. Greitens also was accused by lawmakers of lying to the Missouri Ethics Commission about how his campaign obtained the donor information. The AP reported that Greitens raised about $2 million from those who had previously given significant amounts to the charity.

But Gardner on Wednesday said Greitens has only himself to blame.

Baker released a statement sating that no deals have been made with her office and that her review of the case will continue without fear or favor.

But Laub testified this year that he wasn't the source of the donor list.

Greitens was charged with a invasion of privacy felony in February, but that charge temporarily has been dropped. Greitens is accused of having photographed the woman naked without her consent. She said he did not want to be seen in public with her because he was running for office.

Then she saw a flash and heard a click, like a cellphone camera, she said. I am proud of you and all of our work. There had been allegations Greitens wanted to hide where those donations had come from. He declined to say whether he took a photo.
