Korean official holding full day of meetings in NY

North Korean official Kim Yong Chol to deliver personal letter from Kim Jong Un to President Trump at the White House as summit preparations gain momentum; Kevin Corke reports.

Their job, Pompeo said, was putting Trump and Kim "in a place where we think there could be real progress made by the two of them meeting".

"We'll be meeting on June 12 in Singapore", Trump said, adding that the talks with Pyongyang will take time.

North Korea's flurry of diplomatic activity following a torrid run in nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2017 suggests that Kim is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and the global legitimacy the summit with Trump would provide.

After meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York, Kim delivered a letter to Trump in Washington sent by North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in may travel to Singapore next month to hold a three-way summit with his United States and North Korean counterparts, Seoul officials noted Thursday, possibly suggesting that Washington and Pyongyang may now be considering a formal end to the Korean War as an incentive to the North for its denuclearization.

After the meeting, Trump and Kim Yong Chol posed for photos on the White House lawn.

The president reiterated that he had no plans to sign anything on June 12, but added that he looked forward to lifting economic sanctions now imposed on North Korea.

Trump tweeted Tuesday that is cancellation letter got a "solid response".

He also said that North Korea "wanted to do denuclearisation", although the North did not confirm this.

Nevertheless, the USA president had warm words for Pyongyang, saying the long discussions had touched on North Korea's denuclearisation and economic development.

North Korea has rejected previous USA calls for its unilateral nuclear disarmament and argued instead for a "phased" approach to denuclearization of the entire Korean peninsula, which in the past has also meant removal of the US nuclear umbrella protecting South Korea and Japan.

Of Trump's attitude toward Kim, she said: "He thinks he will be able to charm him into giving up his nuclear weapons program".

US President Donald Trump all but rolled out the red carpet for a top North Korean official on Friday (Jun 1), casting protocol aside and embarking on a characteristically high-stakes gamble. Trump wants to use the meeting to pressure Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear weapons. However, his comments were the most positive from any US official since Trump abruptly cancelled the meeting last week after belligerent statements from the North.

Trump also says he may at some point make public an earlier letter he received from Kim Jong Un.

"We had hundreds of new sanctions ready to go on", Mr. Trump said. He was greeted by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Andrew Kim, a CIA official in charge of the agency's Korea Mission Center.

The letter from Kim Jong Un had to first be inspected by USA officials before it was delivered to the president, a White House official confirmed.

Meanwhile, North Korea suggested during high-level talks on Friday that the two Koreas hold a joint celebration of the anniversary of a historic 2000 inter-Korean summit this month in the South, an official in Seoul said.

"Good working dinner with Kim Yong Chol in NY tonight", Pompeo tweeted Wednesday.

"Normally, I would be skeptical of a trilateral format", Oba told Business Insider.

North Korea has made advances in missile technology in recent years but Trump has sworn not to allow it to develop nuclear missiles that could hit the United States.
