A Top Republican Says Trump Is Wrong About 'Spygate'

By the time Attorney General Jeff Sessions arrived at President Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort for dinner one Saturday evening in March 2017, he had been receiving the presidential silent treatment for two days.

I think what the president is doing is expressing frustration that Attorney General Jeff Sessions should have shared these reasons for recusal before he took the job, not afterward.

Rudy Giuliani told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Trump has asked him multiple times, before and after the former New York City mayor joined the president's legal team last month, about whether Sessions should have been fired. "And if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else".

This exchange, as well as the repeated attacks on Sessions by Trump in the media and on Twitter, are part of Mueller's investigation, the paper reported. "The president was." He added that unless a report on what the informant learned is turned over to Trump, "there's surely not going to be an interview".

The FBI began its probe of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians well before Election Day.

But former Obama administration intelligence officials and lawmakers rebuked Trump and downplayed his concerns, insisting that the informant didn't infiltrate the Trump campaign and wasn't really spying.

Andrew McCarthy revisits the public record and gives Gowdy's comments a close reading in the devastating NR column "Yes, the FBI Was Investigating the Trump Campaign When It Spied". Sessions withdrew from the Russia case oversight because of long-standing Justice Department rules prohibiting lawyers from involvement in investigations when they have a conflict of interest, such as Sessions' political support for Trump and his 2016 meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Trump quoted Gowdy and added his own epigram: " '. That decision by Sessions, as well as Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey, helped lead the way to the appointment of Mueller as special counsel. "I think that is not what Americans want the Federal Bureau of Investigation to be doing".

He said that no fair-minded prosecutor would hire attorney Andrew Weissmann as Mueller has.

Trump's complaints about Sessions have at times won sympathy from some friends who believe Sessions' recusal was too broad and ill-timed and undercut the positive attention from a State of the Union address the president had recently delivered.
