Serena, Sharapova, Nadal progress to round two

The tennis champion made her first appearance during the first round of the French Open, wearing a striking black Nike catsuit that sent viewers into a spin.

The black, shiny, skin-tight outfit looked like a superhero uniform and recalled the controversy that surrounded Anne White's Wimbledon catsuit back in 1985.

"I had a lot of problems with my blood clots", she said.

"Not just for her but for the other women who could play her in the first round".

With the exception of a troll who dared suggest that Williams - who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles - should "slim down" by introducing more cardio and diet into her routine, jaws were, in the words of one commenter, dropped.

Serena Williams has stepped out in a skin-tight outfit at the French Open.

After the match, Williams spoke about life as a working mother.

Gavrilova, the women's 24th seed, battled back from a set and a service break down to defeat Romanian Sorana Cirstea 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in a niggly encounter on Tuesday. I know that the WTA are going through all the right processes.

"All the mums out there that had a tough pregnancy, and had to come back and try to be fierce in the middle of everything, that's what this represents", she told reporter Jon Wertheim.

"You know, emotionally I think it's different, because I'm so emotionally attached to my daughter".

"I actually breast fed for a really, really, really long time, and so I just had this real connection with my daughter".

"So I feel like clay is my best surface and I did put a lot of pressure on myself and I didn't play great".

The very first game featured an ace at 181 kph and when it ended with Pliskova netting a backhand, the chair umpire intoned, "Jeu, Madame Williams", - French for "Game, Mrs Williams", a change from the "Mademoiselle" officials use for unmarried female players. So there is definitely a little functionality to it. "In the beginning it was hard to learn her nap schedules... because I don't want her to ever feel like I'm not around".

An error-strewn game from Serena saw her broken at 3-3, but she broke right back and held to love consolidating at 5-3.

Williams will place the No17 seed, Australia's Ashleigh Barty, in the second round.

Without a win at Roland Garros since 2015, Gavrilova was staring down the barrel of another painful premature exit at the hands of Sorana Cirstea before rallying to a 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 win over the feisty Romanian.

Serena struggled to read the Czech's big serve in the opening exchanges, but Pliskova lacked variety and efficiency in return as Serena lost just a single point on her first deliveries in the opening set.
