Body of missing Guardsman found in flood-ravaged Maryland

According to The Washington Post, the active Army National Guardsman was last seen at 5:20 p.m.in the parking lot of a restaurant in downtown Ellicott City as he was trying to help rescue people.

This undated photo provided by Howard County Police Department shows Eddison Alexander Hermond, who police say went missing in the flooding in historic Ellicott City, Md.

Hermond had been a member of the Maryland Army National Guard since 2009, and served in the Air Force for 10 years from 1996 to 2006, The Sun reported.

Howard County officials released 911 calls from Sunday's deadly flooding in Ellicott City.

Volunteers and crews with trained dogs had been methodically hunting for 39-year-old Eddison Hermond who disappeared Sunday afternoon, following torrential rains that prompted destructive flash flooding in historic Ellicott City for the second time in less than two years. Their hope: to pull together as a community again after the second bad flood deluged their downtown in less than two years.

Simon Cortes, owner of La Palapa Grill & Cantina, said Monday it's "a terrible time", and his business took on about 30 centimetres of water. But he notes the quaint old town has been through it all before, and he'll do his part to spur another revival.

With floodwaters receded Monday, revealing the damage in Ellicott City, residents and business owners could see the scope of the next challenge ahead of them: They face another mammoth cleanup and another daunting comeback.

Officials have said the storm was worse than the one that struck in July of 2016, killing two and leaving the town in need of a total rebuild. This is considered the worst flood since 2016 that claimed two lives.

But Sowers also said he saw other hard-hit locals laughing and joking about their troubles Monday morning - a good sign the Maryland town will launch yet another rebirth from raging floodwaters. The heavy Memorial Day weekend storm created flash floods that sent cars floating down Main Street. But as much as 500,000 gallons of sewage has already spilled.

Allan Kittleman, the Howard County Executive told NBC News: "I can say my heart is broken thinking about what the people are going through here". That assessment work continued Tuesday.
