'Hero' pilot lands plane in China after co-pilot sucked through broken windshield

Captain Liu Chuanjian's heroic actions moments after a cockpit windshield blew out on Monday, almost pulling his co-pilot from the Airbus A319, has won him praise from flight professionals and internet readers for saving over 100 people onboard. Pilot Liu told that after this, I informed the air traffic control and followed his instructions, after which we got all the safe land.

A co-pilot was partially sucked out of the Airbus A319 after the windshield blew out at a height of 32,000 feet. Luckily, he had the belt buckled up. I couldn't hear the radio.

Liu took control. He had to land the plane manually because the automatic flight-control system stopped working.

The Sichuan Airlines passenger flight took off from Chongqing, in southwest China.

None of the flight's 119 passengers were injured during the incident, but some were understandably a bit shaken up.

Two crew members were injured when a commercial flight operated by Sichuan Airlines was forced to make an emergency. It also has global routes to Canada, Japan and the Czech Republic. "The plane was shaking so hard I could not read the gauges", Liu said.

A co-pilot who was on a Sichuan Airlines flight was "sucked halfway" out of the plane after a cockpit windshield blew out.

The airline will soon conduct an investigation, and the Sichuan Airlines incident happened almost one month after a woman died on a Southwest Airlines flight when her window broke.

A video published online by the People's Daily shows oxygen masks deployed, and flight attendants walking up and down the aisle to give passengers instructions on how to disembark.

Speaking to Telegraph Travel, Richard Taylor of the Civil Aviation Authority said: "There are no set protocols for dealing with an incident".

Liu and his crew were praised for the successful emergency landing. Passenger windows are also sturdy with several layers for added protection and they are routinely polished to remove what's called "crazing", fine web-like lines caused by exposure to the elements and to chemicals, such as those used to de-ice planes.

In a statement issued today on its social media account, Sichuan Airlines apologised to the passengers on board for the inconvenience the incident had brought them.

Earlier this year, a Southwest Airlines jet's passenger window shattered when it was hit by debris from an exploding engine, killing one passenger. The pilot brought the plane down safely, landing in the city of Chengdu.
